Default 7/12/06

No workouts -- I needed an off day badly.

Tomorrow: am cardio; pm the thrashing of the legs... so stay tuned, don't touch that back button, just sit there and hit refresh until my next post pops up. It may be several hours, but it'll be worth it

Default 7/13/06 A (hopefully) minor setback and that stupid Flanders

So I wake up at 6:30 am, walk over to my alarm and shut it off, then sit back on the edge of the bed and... I have a horrible lower back spasm. Out of nowhere, my lower back just tightens up and sharp pains shoot through my body. I was in fairly severe pain for more than an hour. I am still in considerable discomfort, but I'm at least able to walk normally. As if the back wasn't enough, my right shoulder is having pain too, I think I slept on it all wrong.

I went to bed last night as fit as a fiddle, after taking a day off from working out, and this morning I wake up feeling like I was beaten with baseball bats... what the hell is up with that?

Anyway, I'm gonna just lay off lifting and give my body a few days to recuperate. I am considering hitting the gym this evening to do some light cardio.

This morning a colleague told me I'm looking really thin lately. I told them I weigh 170 and they said I looked much lighter, like 150. I'll take that as an indication that I'm doing things right. I do look thin as a pin fully clothed, even though according to the BMI I am about 15-20lbs overweight. I am starting to experience the Ned Flanders Effect. Sweet.

Yesterday, I did hit the gym in the evening for some cardio:

Elliptical
Total time:40 minutes
Speed:7mph
Resistance: 4 (I went low to spare my aching lower back)
Heart rate: Don't know... had to use an oldschool elliptical w/o a HR monitor, but I was DRENCHED in sweat afterwards... absolutely soaked.

My back was tweaking a little bit at first, but then it felt good after I warmed up. Today, the back is nearly back to normal... the shoulder pain, gone completely!!! My recuperative powers are Wolverine-esque!!!

I'm not going to lift today, to let the back fully recover, but I foresee lifting tomorrow. This evening I will be back in the gym for some more cardio.

Supplement update (in addition to standards like multi, fish oil, BCAA, etc.):

ALRI Venom Hyperdrive 3.0 2 caps/day
Scivation Sesamin 3 caps/day
Scivation Anagen 4 caps/day

I took today off... I'll be back at it tomorrow. Am cardio, PM chest/shoulders/tris.

Feeling lean... I can now see a 4-pack and I can finally actually feel a six pack under my lower ab blubber. That's the first time I've ever felt the separation between those ab muscles... I was actually convinced I genetically didn't have a six pack... lol

Default 7/18/06

AM cardio

Elliptical for 35 minutes total... yadda, yadda, yadda

PM Chest/Shoulders/Tris

Very similar to my other workouts, except I did decline bb bench and flat db flyes, in addition to the obligatory incline db bench

Nothing else shockingly different... don't see much point posting my workouts in extreme detail; I'm cutting, so I'm not gonna be making big progress on my lifts... that'll happen in Nov. when I start bulking for an extended period of time, with the intensity of a caged wolverine (not the X man, the actual wild animal... no wait, yeah... the X man, that IS what I meant).

Diet is going good... keeping 'er clean... about 2100 cals a day, I'm starving most of the time, but I'm at the point where I kind of like it in a sick way... the suffering to keep seeing the positive changes is sort of a strange addiction.

AM Cardio: Elliptical 35 minutes total... loads of sweat

Weighed in at 168 this morning. :clapping:

I'm being a little aggressive right now with the weight loss... more so than I would be if I wasn't doing this contest and I figure I probably need to be aggressive now, while I still have moderate bodyfat... cuz the last couple of months of IMPC contest prep I should lose the remaining fat very slowly to make sure my precious muscle doesn't evaporate. Once you go below 10% bf, the chance of catabolism is greater, or so I've heard. I hope to be around 10% bf by the end of August or Mid-sept. I have no actual idea what my bf is right now, but I'd guess around 14%.

I'm going to weigh next to nothing when I'm done cutting... it's really kinda scary. When I finish up in November, I'll be under 150... man, I'll be so small. Small, but hopefully shredded... it'll suck if I'm like 145lbs and I still have back fat and love handles, I'll cry... for real. There will be no consoling me.

Hit the leggies, not feeling real energetic tonight... but I worked hard, sweat dripping everywhere. Spraying sweat as it dripped down my face and of my upper lip as I heaved up my SLDL...

Squats: 135 x10, 185 x5, x5, x5, x5, 195 x5

Leg Press: 360 x10, 450 x8... felt too heavy today, went back to 360 x8... that felt too light... 410 x8... ah, just right!!!

SLDL: 135 x10, 175 x6, x6, x6, x6

Seated calve raise: 45lbs x12, 90 x10, 115 x10, x8, x8

That's it, I was too tired to do anything else. Overall, not bad for a 168lb short guy.

Here's a side chest pic taken from last night...

I find it odd that I am now under 170lbs and I find myself still very, very, very far from shredded. I don't think I'm a tiny guy... mass wise, but how the heck am I going to look at sub 150lbs????? Granted, I'm a short-stack, but jeez louise there is no way I can look anything other than scrawny when I finally reach the shred zone. I haven't weighed that little since, what... maybe 8th grade. Its really mind-f'ing me right now... I keep thinking I should just screw the cutting and start bulking again or that I failed on my last bulk... that I should be bigger... I dunno its really killing me. There's no way I can call myself a bb'er if I end-up weighing as much as most 14 year-olds... 14 year-old girls, that is!!!

ARRGGGHHHHH!!!! Sorry, I just need to vent. I'm going to stay the course... I gotta prove to myself that I can get shredded, even if, by the time its over, Ghandi could own me in a posedown.

You know, I somehow missed this response...

I'm right there with you bro. I want to compete. It's a burning desire. There's a million reasons why I want to... but I honestly believe once I get my bodyfat undercontrol I'll be good at it. Not to mention all the money I'll make off my before and after pics + story

I'm not hiring EME though lol. I love EME, he's great, and he definitely knows his stuff, but I don't think he's the right trainer for me at this time. There's other trainers out there that hold similar nutrition views as me and have a lot of experience getting endos contest ready. I'm NOT shortselling michael though, he's fantastic at what he does.

And don't undersell yourself bro. You're one of the few other people I will consider to be close to an intellectual equal

Thanks for the smack, I needed it. Just having a weird shift in mental states... I was psyched this morning to only weigh 168, then tonight I started thinking... Look at all this fat you still have to lose, how the heck are you going to look when you weigh less than Garey Coleman?

I'm only 5' 7".... maybe I'm even shorter now. Seriously, since I started doing squats I swear I went from a solid 5' 8" to just barely 5' 7", maybe I'm even shorter now. My wife is 5' 6" and either she is growing or I'm the incredible shrinking man. I may someday be able to squat 500lbs, but I'll be reduced to 3' 8".

I really hope that I'm wrong about having to lose another 25lbs to get shredded, but I do think that may just be necessary. My legs and arms... sure, they're lean, but I inherited my Dad's Mr. Potatohead-esque physique... I'm prone to twig limbs and a round torso and a giant plastic moustache attached to a big nose. My bodyfat is very neatly distributed almost perfectly evenly over my entire torso... back, abs, chest. My waist is still so wide... my love handles are still over 33" and they were 38" at the end of my bulk up to 190lbs... and my legs were just a tad smoother, just a teeny bit.

I know I'm just obsessing and I need to stop trying to predict how I'm going to look in the future based on weight that I may or may not need to lose. I need to just take it day by day and let the mirror be my guide. If the mirror says I'm looking swole, who cares if I weigh less than an Ewok?

I think you have the potential to be a serious competitor bro. The path is long and arduous, but I can't imagine stopping now... no matter what obstacles I come up against. That's what it takes to compete and do well. I know
