Thumbs up Sandbox log

I'm starting this log to monitor my progress while I'm on my deployment to the desert. I've seen some guys make HUGE transformations while over here and I'm hoping this log will keep my head in the game. I'm concentrating on gaining mass with a hard cut for my last 45 days before leaving.

Normally I'm stationed in Alaska, the long nights and cold winters do strange things to the body, metabolism slows to a crawl and body fat seems to come out of nowhere. Again, lets hope after some bulking I can trim down enough to consider this venture a success.

For meals I eat pretty clean, chicken/beef/turkey/pork, a veggie and a carb with each meal. I drink a LOT of water and skim milk. Protein shakes between meals and following workouts.

Yesterday was an arm day, I added 5lb to my normal weight for EZ bar curls, skulls and rope pulldowns.
I added dips to my workout for the first time, I tried the machine but on max stack it wasnt enough to work for me so I went to the bars...
WOW I like dips! I did 2 sets of bodyweight, decided to try adding a 25lb plate, then did a last set with a 45lb chained to the belt. Felt great! :crazy1:

I dont have access to a fat% reader that I know of... here are the stats I know, I'll work on some measurements tonight.

22 years old
214 pounds (221 when i arrived here on Jan 18)
between 6'1" and 6'2"
EST. 14-16% bf.

max bench - 260
max squat - 265 (estimated, new to doing squats havent maxed yet)
max deadlift - 325

I feel I should also mention that for bench exercises I have to cheats some... I have bad rotator cuffs as well as sciatic nerve damage from motocross accidents so I can not bring the bar any closer than ~2" from my sternum without extreme pain. As long as I stay above that, it's tolerable. :nosthumbs

See you on the boards

Default Back Day

So I asked the guys at the gym if they had a BMI reader, and they do! :boink1: I took a reading 4 times to get a feel for how accurate it was, I got readings of 14.4 -14.8, so I'll call my bf% 14.6.

Today I ran 2 miles before work, then worked out my back this afternoon:

Close grip PD
Wide grip PD
One handed row
Deadlift
CG row
Laying lat extension.

bumped up sets of pulldowns from 120 to 150. tried 165 but it was a bit much for 8 clean reps.
Deadlifts are still pretty new to me, I used 205 today which is only about 70% of my max, but its still 35 pounds more than i used last week for sets. overall I felt pretty good when finished this exercise.
Everything else was just about the same as last week, no weight change, no significant difference in strength or endurance.

Weight: 216.2 (had to eat before gym time)
bf%: 14.6
bf weight: 31.5 lb

I'll try to post weight/bf% every friday from here out

I'd like to see 7-8% bf, 195-205 lb by mid May.

Hey Staff Sergeant:

Looking forward to following your log. You have a fan here. I'm a retired U.S. Navy Captain (06) who spent a little time in the sand box, too. Keep up your training and keep us posted. Maybe you will want to compete in a bodybuilding competition when you come home. Lots of good advice on that in this forum. Keep Charging! And keep your head down. :mgfight:

Default shoulders

Shoulder day today.
Took 60 lbs off of my read bar shrug. Down to 165 now, but I feel keeping constant tension on the trap (coming down to parallel) while holding the contraction for that extra second will be more beneficial than struggling with heavy rep's.

Also tried seated dumbell shrugs for the first time, felt awkward but i think its just my form being a little off.

Rear Bar shrug
DB Fly
Calf machine shrug
DB military
Cables

It's a BMI reader/tester, whatever you want to call it, it also shows bf%. I wasnt too concerned with the BMI number tho... It's one of the ones with 4 readers for your palms that you hold out at 90 degrees from your body. Not sure how to explain it aside from that.

Angry Last day on old routine

Finished my old routine on a low note. LONG day at work (18 hrs) followed by probably the worst meal the base has ever concocted...

weighted dips
decline bench
rope pulldown
incline db
ab routine
20 mins light running.

terrible day, felt worthless in the gym but didnt want to miss a workout. ate a quick dinner, then off to bed.

Tomorrow I start SHSHT, fingers crossed for good results.

Post SHSHT day 1

First day trying out the routine that Spytech laid out. It's quite a bit different from the routine's I'm used to, the amount of sets per muscle are quite a bit less however the weights used are heavier.
Took a few minutes to dial in where my 6 rep max weights were since I normally work in the 10-12 range, but once I got a feel for them the workout seemed to go pretty smoothly. 30-45 seconds between sets is rough to get used to, again different from what I normally do, but when i left the gym i was sweating like a whore in church

Back, Traps, Biceps, Forearms
BB Rows x2 175*6
CG Pulldowns x2 180*6
Weighted Chins x2 bodyweight*6 -required assist on rep 6 set 2. Thinking of substituting wide grip pulldowns since I'm crap at chins

Seated Rows x1 170*6
Deads x2 255*6
Shrugs x2 245*6

EZ Curls x2 105*6
DB Hammers x2 40*6
Cable Curls x1 70*6

So begins baseline week. I'll probably spend this week closing in on the true 6 rep mark to get the most of this program.

On a sidenote I've decided that a clean bulk here is out of the question. The menu they offer just isn't going to work. I'm going to stick to a clean diet as much as I can, I just wish they would offer more healthy food here!:screaming

Default SHSHT Day 2

Legs, Calves

For squats and leg movements all together I had been focusing mostly on high reps to help with endurance. Moving into the 4-6 rep range here was harder than i thought it would be, I had to try several times to find a weight that felt right which kinda burned me out before I even really started.

SQUAT: 245x6, 245x6, 245x6.
LEG PRESS: 430x6, 430x6. there was a group of no less than 6 guys circulating through the leg sled, i had to make a choice between a 20 minute wait and the machine. the machine won this time, as much as i dislike using it.
SLDL: 245x6, 245x6
SMITH CALF: 260x6, 260x6, 260x6
SEATED CALF: 135x6, 135x6 with 5 sec static hold.

As I said, I dont normally work my legs this hard at all. I had to stretch my calves out quite a bit throughout the day following my workout to keep from cramping up. My legs are crap, I completely omitted them from workouts for quite a while and it's really catching up to me now.
my legs->:rock2:<-me

Default Wed- Day off

Yesterday was the first day since I got here that I didnt go to the gym for SOMETHING. No cardio, no lifting, no ab work, nothing. It was then that i realized exactly how boring this place really is.

On the plus side, my X-Factor and Green Bulge came in yesterday morning, so I'm on Day 2 of the cycle.
Tonight I will be working Chest, Shoulders and Tri's, tomorrow I will post body weight and bf%.

Great log so far Grimmer! :nosthumbs: Good luck with the new routine and supps! I'll drop in every once and awhile to see how your progressing. I'm thinking of trying Spy's routine myself.

Cool Day 2 X-F, week 1 SHSHT

Second day on XF cycle, also took Green Bulge prior to my workout and will continue to do so for the duration of the X-Factor cycle.
Today was also my first day doing Spy's chest routine, more than I'm used to, but i like it

InclineDB 75x6, 75x6, 75x6
DeclineDB 85x6, 85x6
DB Press 80x6, 80x6
Military Press 95x6 <- guess who hasn't done these before
Side Laterals 20x6, 20x6
Rear laterals 20x6
Skullcrushers 110x6, 105x6 -110 is doable, but for started to slip, will work with 105 for now
Weighted Dips BW+35x6, BW+35x6
*Pushdowns subbed out for weighted dips since the crew of kids that like to work out 13 deep was 'doing cables' :screaming
Rev Close Grip Bench 165x6

Workout- I felt pretty good lifting today. I had energy coming from somewhere but certain exercises I just couldnt perform any better no matter how hard I tried *military press*

Weekly weight/bf- Weighed myself today, small change for the better. Went and checked my bf%, and a pleasant surprise:
Weight: 217.1 (214.0 last fri)
bf%: 14.1 (14.6% last fri)

XFactor- Only day 2, so nothing to report. Woke up with a headache but I seriously doubt it had anything to do with XF-although I see a lot of people get headaches from it.

Angry X-Factor day 3, SHSHT week 1

So. The headache that I woke up with the other day decided to stick around and turn into a migraine. I tried to go do my workout, but it didnt work. Today is supposed to be a rest day, I'll be in the gym making up the missed day yesterday.

Pisses me off tho, I was feeling good about those SLDL's

XFactor- Headache from hell. Gone as of right now, let's hope it stays that way.

Default X-Factor day 4, SHSHT week 1 end

Back, Traps, Bi's, Forearms

BB Row 155x6, 155x6
CG Pulldown 180x6, 180x6
Chins 6, 6
Seated Rows 190x6
SLDL 275x6, 285x6
Shrugs 225x6, 225x6
EX Curls 115x6, 115x6
DB Hammer 40x6 40x6
Cable Curls 160x2

Workout- Today is a make up day from the migraine I had Friday. Not too bad overall, BB row wasn't very impressive but a PR on SLDL for weight x rep Load week starts Monday, looking forward to it!

XFactor- Day 4. Nothing extreme yet, minor discomfort in my triceps and a few places in my back.

Default X-Factor Day 5, SHSHT week 1 end

Off day, no lifting of any sort. Just sweet rest-

Workout- Nothing today, Legs tommorow. For some reason I really just want to deadlift again, I'm really starting to like those:crazy1:

X-Factor- I took XF in my standard dosing, 1-2-1. I also took Green Bulge around the same time that I would normally take it. While taking XF and not working out I did notice I had some restless sleep. Nothing horrible, but noticeable. Still no more headaches :fingersxd let's hope it keeps up!
*Also started noticing the strange burp taste from XF... pretty bad but not unbearable

*edit

Leg day was typical, I hate it. I have so much trouble keeping focused and pushing myself on leg day, everything else I get borderline excited to hit the gym, leg days I just want to take a nap instead

Although yesterday I was 'schooled' in squats. This kid was on the squatrack for 20-25 minutes, not willing to let anyone work in. So I head over and do my SLDL's first.
Anyway, this guy has 405 on the bar and is doing a *maybe* 6 inch ROM squat, nothing remotely close to parallel. I say nothing and just go about my business. When he's done I go to the bar and load my 245lbs and do my modest squats properly. He says, 'dude wtf are you doing, you can lift way more weight by not going down so far. Who taught you to do squats?'

I just turned up the ol' Ipod and kept on going

Post X-Factor day 6, SHSHT week 2

Squats 245x6, 245x6, 245x6, 245x6
Leg Press 450x6, 450x6
SLDL 285x6, 285x6, 285x5.5 (lost grip)
Smith Calf 295x6, 295x6, 295x6, 295x6*5 sec hold
Seated Calf 135x6, 135x6

Workout- Legs, again. Get to do legs 2x this week under the load rotation. I really need to find some way to be happy doing legs, maybe if I get stronger I'll get some satisfaction out of them. So far, they just make me have trouble going up and down stairs the next day

X-Factor- No DOMS yet, no lack of sleep. very very minor headache again, just enough to know its there, not bad enough to effect me really. Seems vascularity could be on the rise, but I cant be ce
