Default So chest and tri's or chest and bi's?

I have heard both sides of this :

seperating chest and tri's allows you to use more weight since your tri's aren't so tired. But you run the risk of over-training since bench press works the tri's.

Keeping them together keeps you from over-training, and since they(tri's) fatigued since you worked on them with bench press it is a better workout.

Your thoughts?

No offence man, but it's been pretty well covered here:

Welcome aboard though :bigthumbu

Thanks for the link.

Sorry I suck at the search. I didn't know what to search for.

Thanks again,
Brian

See which split works well for you. For some people, training bis and tris twice a week (once directly and once indirectly) is too much. It works well for me if I can keep the volume at a reasonable level though. For both bis and tris I do a total of 3 exercises, 2 sets each, and that is low enough volume for me to train chest/bis and back/tris.

Most people don't know that during most pressing movements, the medial head of the tri's takes most of the work. That means you can still do exercises that target the lateral/long head relatively fresh.

Also, you wouldn't be able to lift the same amount of weight halfway through a triceps only workout either. So the idea of the tri's not being "fresh" after a chest workout is pretty weak, in my opinion.

Not all chest exercises involve presses either. Pec-deck and cable cross-overs won't negatively affect triceps strength.

Lastly, some exercises like dips, are viewed as working chest and tri's equally, so one exercise can kill two birds with one stone.

I wouldnt say equally since a slight lean forward and elbows a bit flared will put more emphasis on the chest, while more straight up and arms tucked will put more empahsis on the tris.

Or you could do it somewhere in the middle. The point is you can't just lean forward a couple inches and magically remove the triceps. Either way, it's a compound movement, so as long as you add enough weight everything will get hit hard enough.

Actually, I just switched to a new routine. Now I do chest/bi's, shoulders/legs, back/tri's, with Saturday as my weak point training day.
