If your doing them in front it's not causing discomfort or excessive streching on your joints it should be fine. It's behind the neck that going too deep can cause problems.

Exactly what was stated above. Also take into consideration of your back posture and not tweaking anything back there.

there's a lot of variation in training principles out there. I know guys who had been training military presses to the base of their neck for decades with zero problems but most people now will say no further than the bottom of ear level.

I think people try to maximize gain with minimizing injury risk. I don't think you were lied to. I think you were given a range of motion that would keep injury to a minimum while still seeing good gains.

Go to the front of the chest... I've been told by several doctors and experienced weight lifters to not do behind the head military presses or pulldowns, so that's what I follow.

Some people like going behind the head and will tell you otherwise - I just choose not to.

With heavy weight i go behind the neck simply because the arch my back goes into when going in front hurts my back. Lighter weight i go in front...With most of my exercises I try to get a few variations in there.

Using a Smith Machine is much safer for behind-the-neck presses.

I perform them to the front, down to my upper pecs/ collar bone, with a mid-bench to provide some back support. I can't perform them to the back, it would kill my joints.

I agree an exercise should be performed in the range of motion that is safe and comfortable for ones individual body. Not according to someone elses range.

If it is in the front, then yes I would say down to your chest is okay. Be careful of your posture obviously, it's easier to arch your back too much and damn near turn it into an incline press. Try to keep your wrists as straight as possible so that your arms are going as straight up and down as possible.
