| SEEK & DESTROY | I've had to take a break from lifting around this last month - what with a neck nerve injury and taking a 4 week winter class, which is quite demanding. I'm going to dive back in full blown in 2 weeks when the class is over. My main question is about how long will it take to get my size and strength back that have atrophied? Around 2-3 weeks most likely? I've never had to take a prolonged break from lifting. Around 2 weeks is probably the longest, but I needed it anyway to give my CNS a break.

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 51 | LOL.. I'm going to be teaching a clinic this summer on Muscle Memory. We'll really find out what happens when you have to lay off for almost 6 months due to injury. If you are only laying off for a few weeks, and your body isn't immobilized due to injury, it won't take you long at all to get back to where you were before. As long as you aren't layed up in traction , or immobilized in a sling as I am, you aren't going to lose nearly as much muscle during the layoff. Don't sweat it too much. Within a month of consistent training, you should be back to where you were before. - EME

| Mushroom Cloud Laying.... | Yep, it isn't a huge loss, you will be back to normal is less than a month, probably 2 or 3 weeks of hard lifting and you will be about 97%+ what you were... it doesn't take long at all!

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 58 | I took off for 20 years and got everything back that I had before within 6 months of hard dedicated training. That was a year and a half ago. I took off for one month recently and got it all back in 2-3 weeks. I think you will find that after a month off you will be able to get it back quickly and also add somemore. I think we tend to overdo training and don't give enough thought to rest and recouperation (We need adequate amounts of time off daily, weekly and annually). Think of your 4 weeks off as your annual R&R. ![]() *

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 0 | METAL: some good advice: DO NOT BE WAYLAID BY THE ACTUAL AMOUNT OF WEIGHT THAT YOU LIFT WHEN YOU BEGIN YOUR COMEBACK! weight , in bodybuilding, is relative: what matters is the stress being applied to your muscles. when you start up again, start lower, and take your time to get back to the same levels, because what works in lifting is sending a message to your muscles that they have to compensate for the load that they are being subjected to: when you have had a layoff, it will take LESS weight to accomplish this neural signal! muscle memory is nothing more than a gradual return to the potential that you proved you can reach the first time around. Why rush it and invite injury! it will come.... |
