Default Is Just Deadlifting Enough Work For Lower Back?

I was wondering if just doing heavy deadlifts are enough work for the lower back on back day?

Yes, for bodybuilding it is.

If it is for sports, then you probably would want to add more exercises to strengthen the lower back to support a strong core to protect yourself in certain sports.

You know, you're the 1st person that's given me a straight answer all night. I've been asking this question over and over again at bb.com and people don't even answer your question properly, they just give you some other insight into their training method which you don't even care about. Then when you say 'thanks I appreciate your help but it wasnt really what I was looking for' you get flamed to shit.

Btw, now that you've said just deadlifting is enough then what do you think of this:

3 x 6 Bent Over Barbell Rows
3 x 6 Dumbbell Rows

3 x 6 Deadlifts
3 x 6 Good Mornings

3 x 6 Weighted Pull-Ups

Vs

3 x 6 Bent Over Barbell Rows
3 x 6 Dumbbell Rows
3 x 6 Cable Rows

3 x 6 Deadlifts

3 x 6 Weighted Pull-Ups

In the 1st routine there is 2 middle back exercises & 2 lower back exercises. In the 2nd routine there is 3 middle back exercises and 1 lower back exercise.

So should I stick with the 2nd routine because for bodybuilding it's more important to have bigger, more defined middle/upper back rather than lower back isn't it?

Btw, cheers for the help mate.

Not when doing them first affects your BB Row form. I put just the same amount of effort into the deads wherever I do them in my routine anyway.

You probably won't need 2 lower back exercises, since most hamstring exercises hit the lower back directly + deadlifts is enough.

Keep with 2-3 lat exercises and 1 lower back exercise.

Pull ups
Deadlifts
Bent-over Rows
Dumbbell Rows

Those are a good base.

I do GMs after my DLs, but I do 1 back day specifically for the lower back and another for lats.

if just for bodybuilding and wanting to develop the lower back, reverse hypers, weighted hypers, and sldls would be fine.

rack pulls probably the best.

Personally, I like GMs the best for lower back in addition to the "core" lower body exercises of squatting and deadlifting as they are the most transferable assistance exercise.

I agree, I find doing GMs is important for my lower back as well.

yeh... BB.com is like that.

Any type of deadlift should be sufficient. I do both SLDL and standard during my rountine.

DL's are hardcore. One of the top 5 for sure.

Squat is probably the most hardcore, since it has been the exercise with the biggest weight recorded.

If your powerlifting/strongman, you'll need more lower back, bodybuilding doesn't recall you to have a big lower back. ( )
