Exclamation Help with Forearm Pain!

I think I over worked my forearms last Friday while shooting for a personal best. I hit that PB but at the expense of my forearms I think. It is effecting my grip, lift and distracting the hell out of me. I know the first thing anyone would say is that it is time for a break. The trouble with that is that I am taking a break in 2 weeks for family vacation. So I don’t want to break now, then work for a week then break again, and 3 weeks off just wont work with my OCD. How can I get my forearms back fast so that I can push through this week and next? I am looking forward to a well-earned rest when I go on vacation. This forearm pain is SO not part of the plan.

is it a pulled muscle type pain? a soreness pain? or are the pumps in your forearms too much?

I think it is soreness. See it was bugging me big time at the gym, but it is ok now. When I stretch the area it feels a bit better. I would think if it were pulled or torn that stretching it would hurt. The pump does hurt too. The more I workout the more the area hurts.

i would start focusing more on pushing movments then pulling to help relieve the stress on the forearm but still get a workout in. eat a few bananas before your workout also.

I used to get the same thing. It used to be really bad, but it only hurts when I let the bar go during preacher curls or barbell curls (heavy). I bet you were probably using a straight bar for your forearm work? According to a sports medicine physician, it's called ulnar stress syndrome and it's due to extreme supination of the forearms and undue stress placed on the ulna secondary to weak forearm musculature. I'm not saying your forearms are weak, just maybe overworked. Unfortunately, the only things to do is to wrap it up tight and deal, or switch to lighter weight while the pain goes away. What worked best for me was to stop using the straight bar for a while...

Damn 0311 I think you hit it. As a matter of fact I do use a straight bar to work forearms and I increased the weight on that too. Hummmmmmmmmm… I decided to take one day off and slather it in Icy Hot. But tomorrow I will need to wrap it up and go back to work. I will change to hammer curls and see if that feels better for a while and avoid any extra forearm workouts for now. Thanx for your post.

I would back off any direct forearm work..Maybe only standing reverse grip curls. Other than that, slinging some heavy deads, JS rows, ect will more than work your forearms.

Good luck.

So that is what the hell that is!!! Man my forearms kill me after doing heavy curls. It is kinda like tennis elbow (which I also have) in reverse. Try 1 arm DB curls. They work for me. And an EZ bar for curling also helps.

Thanx guys, I am back on top now. I stopped all extra forearm work other than what I get from my regular work out. And while I was resting my forearms I employed lifting hooks to take the pressure off my ring and pinky fingers where the pain started. I am almost 100% now and about to go on that family vacation next week anyway so I think I am set. Thanx for your help.

When you guys get forearm pain you can do something called a "Contrast Bath" All you do is take two buckets deep enough to submerge your forearms in and fill one with cold water, as cold as you can stand it, and one with hot water, as hot as you can stand it without burning yourself. Submerge arms in cold for two minutes then switch and put in hot water for two minutes. Do this three times. Keep your hands still in the cold water and move them around and stretch them in the hot water. You can also use the kitchen sink. Works Wonders... :nosthumbs

I have a similar problem that you do, except it stems from bowling, and not over-working my forearms. Because of the way I twist and distory my wrist when I bowl, I caused tendinitis in my palm/wrist/forearm. It started in just under my ring and middle fingers on my palm and then shot all the way the middle of my forearm. I can't work my forearms specifically now, since it causes a really dull pain in my forearm. Sadly, the only "cure" I have found for this is time, and sometimes even that doesn't help. Its been over 4 months since I last bowled, and I went bowling again last friday, and it still hurts like a mother. I would take it to a doctor if the pain persists, just to see if they have any suggestions. But, as with most sports injuries, if it hurts to do it, don't do it

Hopefully this helps you a bit.

I had this issue about 18 months ago, stop doing all types of pulling lifts. This includes curls... work the hell out if your legs for two weeks. Chances are they could use it.
