Tuesday, April 18, 2006 San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - The federal grand jury that is investigating whether or not San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds committed perjury in 2003 has reportedly subpoenaed Giants' head trainer Stan Conte. The San Francisco Chronicle, citing three unidentified sources familiar with the investigation, reported on Tuesday that Conte has been added to the list of people to testify on April 27 in front of a grand jury at the Phillip Burton Federal Building in San Francisco. Bonds' personal surgeon, Dr. Arthur Ting, was subpoenaed last week, according to the Chronicle, which reported last week that a federal grand jury is investigating whether or not Bonds committed perjury when he testified under oath that he never used steroids. According to that report, Bonds testified in 2003 that he never used steroids in connection with an investigation into the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative (BALCO), which was allegedly providing undetectable steroids to a number of athletes. Other professional athletes were also subpoenaed at that time and given partial immunity for truthful testimony. However, according to the Chronicle's sources, federal investigators believed Bonds lied under oath in part because documents seized in government raids on BALCO and Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson's home included doping calendars that reflect Bonds' drug use. Later, four men, including Anderson and BALCO founder Victor Conte, pleaded guilty to steroid distribution charges. Stan Conte, who is not related to BALCO founder Victor Conte, is the first non-player employee of the Giants to be subpoenaed. Stan Conte is being asked to hand over all of the team's training records related to Bonds, the paper said. The Chronicle story is written by Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada, the two authors of the book "Game of Shadows" which states that Bonds started using steroids after the 1998 season. http://www.power92wynu.com/cc-common...article=452653
