I see you use cigarettes and obesity as comparisons and on some level it works. I personally think it is more along the lines of being in a victim based society where it's always someone else's fault regardless of the situation we're in. Sometimes this is indeed the case but I would be willing to bet that the majority are responsible for their situation.

As a dad of 4 and a police officer with people I have to look after and as a former Military member who had troops to lead; I know one thing very well. Each person has to be motivated in ways that works for them and taking a one strategy approach will do nothing but hinder your goals. Telling one person they are fat may be the key but telling another that they deserve to be in better shape could be their motivation.

Now the final blanket statement you made I disagree with entirely. A person moderately overweight could be in much better shape(health wise) than a person who is on steroids and is muscular and strong with a low bf%. Looking at one aspect of health while ignoring others doesn't make you overall more healthy. It just means in that category you are using to compare, you are in better shape.

That fat person may be completely healthy blood, liver, kidney, heart and brain functions but that 8%bf juiced bodybuilder could look great but has one foot in the grave and not even know it.

What we need to do as a society is make sure we're teaching complete health and moderation in all things that being good in one area isn't a free ticket to let another area get out of control. Education at home, schools, work etc is needed. Not scare tactics or unproven, outdated beliefs either.

My 2 cents

I agree entirely. Even though you take some general "health" classes in elementary school, and Physical education all throughout highschool.... no one ever teaches you nutritionally right from wrong. Never have I attended a classroom that went over the value of eating 100% whole wheat bread vs. White bread, or how unhealthy a breakfast of bacon eggs and fruit loops can be. In fact I'd say it's quite the opposite. Through out younger childhood you are pretty much given poor quality foods in cafeterias, and "child meals" are usually deep fried no matter wether it's a diner or a mcdonalds.

Note the next time you speak to someone who doesn't follow fitness/nutrition like we do.... exactly how much they DON'T know about how to eat healthy. If you take a random person off the street and ask them to define what a healthy meal is, or even worse, a healthy day's worth of food.... they wouldn't have the slightest clue how to answer.

This is in fact a problem, because we live in society with damn near unlimited food resources.

Thanks big guy. I have to tell you this because it really fits in well with what you have been saying about overweight people.

I had posted a pic of me holding a snake i shot and posted this pic on bb.com Hell i was bored and thought it would get a laugh, it was a very big snake. Anyway, the only comments i got were "WTF? what has this got to do with bodybuilding? hell i bet you never even touched a weight other than the weight of a plate of food" and " this guy looks ridiculious, i bet he hasnt even seen a gym" and "good lord what a fat ass old man"

Those were exact quotes fromt he posting. My mouth hit the floor, i did workout and was actually benching 365lbs. at the time but i was FAT. Those azzholes really hurt my feelings and my self confidence big time, i wanted to quit and go drown myself with chinese buffet at first... but i told myself, that they were right, i looked like sht. So i emailed Chuck Rudolf and the rest is history! I got my ass in gear because people were very mean to me. I didnt run off like a scared school girl and eat cookies and ice cream.

It was the best thing anyone ever said to me really. I was 230lbs and 26% bf. I am now 185lbs and approx 6 to 7% bf. I like me this way much better.

I was at my kids school the other day and had lunch with them. Every type of unhealthy, processed, fried, battered type of product was there to be bought. You couldn't get a soda though. You could however get all kinds of sugary energy drinks. Some of which were carbonated. How's that for ironic.

and they say its the parents fault their kids are fat...? not 100%. the schools need to pull the drink machines out, kids are getting hooked on pepsi and mt. dew and getting fatter and fatter. i have never seen a healthy meal served in school even when i was a kid the food sucked.

What's sadder is there is a whole lotta "talk" about how we need to fix the obesity problem and school lunches etc.... but no action. The people making the bills don't even know wtf it means to eat healthy.

Do you know what constitutes as "healthy" at the dining halls on my college campus? A small salad bar. That makes the rest of the slop "okay".....

Getting a piece of meat that is not marinated in weird chemicals is a cruel joke.

I suck miserably at dieting, so I summoned the all mighty EME and he has bestowed a great diet upon me that I follow (except right now, but I'm sick as a dog and I must eat to get better). I thank him for his help getting me from 265 to 245 (and down to whooping butts in the IMPC later on), but the first 35 lbs to get to 265 were my own, and it's not him that wakes up every day and eats my food and lifts in my gloves and walks in my shoes, it's me who has to make that commitment to myself every day to do better and to be better. That is what all of these people on here are here for as well, we are a community striving for the same basic things.

Self empowerment is a wonderful thing.

The best thing anyone has ever said to me was "Hey, you wanna come workout with me?" Changed my life.

For some people, it takes positive motivation rather then a negative. I know its also situational. I knew I was fat, but did I have the motivation to change myself? No, because no one said "hey, let me help you out."

I agree completely. My school put whole grain crust on their pizza, yet they were still selling ding-dongs, ho-hos, cookies, zebra cakes (lol), and everything else under the sun.

Another thing that gets me is the fat people that refuse to acknowledge that they have a problem. "Big is beatuiful" they say. A lot of them are just too weak to do anything about being overweight, and try to find an excuse.

That is a good story.

The thing is some overweight people will refuse help because they consider it an insult.

I know for me, nobody helped or motivated me to become healthy. because nobody cared, everyone and i mean EVERYONE in my family is fat so it's completely normal for our family hence nobody caring. nobody helped me get off my chair and into my shoes for an hour of running 7 days a week or get up at 5:30am for 150 pushups and sit ups....the only one that did was myself, and some of my family seen that. they watched me change myself...so far my mom has lost 30lbs and so has my uncle, glad to see they're trying...

I can understand being too weak, because for years, I was. But, even still, you need to be strong to say "yes, I need to change my ways before they kill me." I'm still struggling with that. I don't eat enough/any/many vegetables and its been hard as hell to get into it as my parents do nothing but mock me about it. They also mock me on carrying a gallon of water with me, eating clean foods (aka "Why do you have to eat so much chicken, eggs and peanut butter? It gets expensive, can't you just eat a hamburger instead?" They really aren't helping me out at all. They mock me when I ask them to take pictures for the IMPC last year, and this year, I'm not letting them. I don't need any more bad influences on it.

They sit there and wonder why they can't lose weight, but then look around, look at what they eat and how, and when and its plain as day. Yes, my mom has diabetes and can't lose weight, but I'll be damned if my dad has an excuse.

My thing is, some of us just get stuck in a rut (and the difference between a rut and a grave? depth) and can't get out because no one is standing on the edge up top holding their hand out saying "need some help?"

I am incredibly lucky to have found this site and I am sincerely grateful to everyone for their words of ENCOURAGEMENT that I lack in other area's of my life.

Side note :
Kinda ironic realization I just made. I consider the internet to be one of the things that stopped me from being who I could have been in high school, and yet, here it is, one of the things that saved my life as well.
