Default So... will extra fat cells ever go away on their own?

So... "Average Joe" is 100lbs overweight for 4 years. He is actually able to lose 90lbs of it on his own over the course of a year or two. We know that when you get obese like that your body produces more fat cells. But there's the answer that I'm not clear on:

Can or will those extra fat cells ever go away once they are no longer needed?

Some people say yes, more people say no. A good link would be great too.

"Once new adipocytes are formed, they remain throughout life and only a reduction in size of the cell is possible. This increased number of adipocytes has far-reaching consequences for the treatment and prevention of obesity."

Yup. Sorry Skel. Once ur fat, bulking is much tougher. Former fatties put on more adipose and faster.

that's bad. I have some huge ass mountains to move if I ever want to compete. Not only do I lose it slow, I gain it fast.

To make it worse that means far in the future when i'm old and sedentry i'm gonna end up getting fat again...

On the bright side. If there is a famine, I'm outliving all of you

DUDE YOU KICK ASS !!! worry not, it will come, not trying to be funny or anything, do you do visualization excercises? Frank Zane used to reapeat to himself before his olympia victory that he would win the olympia, or say he was the olympia. I find myself on some days saying to myself I will compete and be ripped. It def shifts your mind set to FOCUS OR FOLD...

I know a girl who was fat her whole life growing up till she was around 22-23 then she went to the gym, and lost her weight.. she has stayed thin now for over 15 years, and she eats plenty of food, dosn't starve herself... She put on alot of weight when she had a child, (atleast 50lbs, then lost it all in a few months and was skinny again... and still is... She did not exercise at all for a lot of that time after the initial weight loss...

so, the chances of a former fat person gaining their ideal physique are restricted by this... sux. human body can be oh-so-smart, and yet remarkably dumb all at the same time :p

no, i wouldn't say our ideal physique is barred from us. The difference is that we will forever have to be much stricter about our diets for the rest of our lives. An ecto can get away with a few cheat meals a week.... cheat meals for us former fatties are disasterous.

Wouldnt our best bet just be to increase our lean mass? That way even though we may have more fat cells the ratio of fat cell to muscle will be reduced.. just a thought

yeah, that's exactly my thoughts and what I've been trying to do. I think my best bet for long term low bodyfat (hell, my best bet to even GET to low bodyfat) is to pack on so much muscle that it takes a ton of calories just to maintain it.

With my set of blueprints I'm convinced it will be very difficult to reach low bodyfats. I literally start feeling sickly every time I approach that magical 15%. (I'm only judging bodyfat as a function of my appearance in the mirror. If I had to guess my current bf% i'd say 17.... maybe 18 tops... i've put on a few pounds lol.)

Naw, i was fat, lost most of it. Had a sixpack, but now i kinda just like being 14% BF. It is where my body likes to be naturally. You'll gain the fat back on a bulk, but only to a point. As long as ur diet is clean, u shouldn't gain too much fat past the "Magical" number ur body likes. If it is 18% so be it, but u will never get back to where u were.

BUT I have somewhat of a dumb question, could a former obese person compete at the same umm cuts mebe is the word as a pretty much lean person throughout his whole life?
