Default New to the boards

Hi I am new to these boards and have gotten a good work out routine set up by DarkFalcon. While reading that thread a poster suggested I post over here about my doing the SB diet to continue to lose the fat that I have lingering while opening up other foods that most bodybuilders are eating such as oats and whole grains while still being able to keep it low carb. I have went from 341 to 218 in just over 1 year doing Atkins but the fat content of that and the lack of fruits and whole grains wont work well for BB. So I am pretty much open to suggestions.

I think south beach is an 'okay' diet, but still not optimal for our purposes I think what's more important is how many calories you're eating, where they're coming from, and when?

I didn't agree with some of the foods the south beach diet told my mom to eat. Some of them lacked nutritional value. They also seemed to keep with the 3 meal system which is by far inferior to eating 6 meals a day.

I'd suggest setting yourself up a nice daily diet plan. Break ~2600 calories (if you're still shooting for more fat loss) up into 5-6 meals evenly spaced throughout the day. Then out of those calories try to break it up into a 50% protein 30% carb 20% fat diet. This should be good for fat loss (what most people use). Good luck and don't feel afraid to ask lots of questions! There are many extremely experinced and nice people on these boards

Because sb diet does not suggest 5-6 small meals a day, and does not suggest any type of strategic nutrient timing in correlation with weight lifting. South beach, for the MOST PART is a pretty sound and healthy diet plan, but it is not meant for a bodybuilder, it's meant for the average joe with a desk job.

True there are 3 balanced meals and between meal snacks. It works out to about the same as we do.

I eat South Beach foods. Oatmeal, eggs, chicken, tuna, salmon, sweet potatoes, brown rice, salads, fibrous veggetables, olive oil, fish, nuts, berries, some fruit. If the guy is eating SBD and is new to bodybuilding, why not let him keep that frame of reference and just learn the things that are different. about bodybuilding nutrition. (More protein, pwo shakes, 6 meals, watch the calories and macronutrients, etc. ?) He is already eating the right kind of foods. It is just a pet peeve of mine that people knock SBD without knowing what it is. although, I think you may know more about it than most.

No one ever knocked it though.

I understand your frustration though, I get a bit ancy when people knock CKD w/o knowing much about it.

Unholy,

Here is my typical meal plan:

Breakfast, 3 eggs omelet, oatmeal with berries
Meal 2, protein skim milk protein shake with skim milk, mixed nuts
Lunch Chicken and vegetable (sweetpotato, rice & beans or baked potato)
During workout*, protein shake made with OJ and water
Meal 5, spinach/garden salad with tuna or salmon (foil pack or can)
Dinner, various (lean beef, chicken or fish and fibrous vegetables and/or salad)
Snack, an occasional fat free plain yogurt with nuts and/or berries.

Once per week I allow the dinner meal to be anything I want including spaghetti, pizza, philly cheese steak, etc. This meal should not exceed 600 calories.

* You will get lots of opinions on the post workout shake. Pick one that you like. I haven't seen any scientific proof on any of them.

Protein, 246 grams, 47%
Carbs, 108 grams, 20%
Fats, 80 grams, 33% (less than 10% of total calories come from saturated fats. All dressings are Olive Oil & Vinegar. I cook with olive oil. I use Omega3 fish oil gels. The rest of the fats come from eggs, salmon, shredded parmesan cheese and animal protein.)

Total calories while cutting = 2200
Total calories when bulking = 2800 (currently bulking)

Supplements:
Whey Protein (4 scoops per day)
Multi (2 per day)
Creatine (1 teaspoon)
Fish oil gels (3-6)
Glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM (4 per day for joints and ligaments)
Various for blood pressure
Various for healthy heart
Various to promote testosterone

I drink lots of clear liquids, including green tea and water.

You will probably get a lot of opinions on the "proper" diet. All of my foods are natural foods (except the whey protein is processed), I don't eat things with additives in them if I can help it. I prefer higher protein and lower carbs, but a 40%/30%/30% p/c/f diet will work just as well. The one above works for me.

I track everything that I eat using http://www.fitday.com's database.
