| IronMass Donator | I didn't know what to put in the title for this question. On Discovery Channel right now is a story about a guy weighing 1,072#. I understand there are instances where genetics and glandular issues play a large role in body composition. But regardless of how the weight was acquired, wouldn't it still require a minimum number of calories to maintain it? Using myself as an example, at ~160# I require between 1600 and 1920 calories per day, depending on my goal. So, if this guy weighs 1,072#, even though it's mostly fat, wouldn't it still require an astronomical number of calories to maintain it? (8,473 calories per one calculator.) Why not just restrict his intake? Especially since he is totally dependent on the care of others, why not just refuse to buy the stuff? Or should I assume that the caretakers haven't been overfeeding him and he has some really weird metabolism that produces new tissue out of thin air? How much would that much food cost? 8,500 calories worth I mean. I don't know if my question makes any sense. ![]()

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 158 | your question makes perfect sense.... and to be honest, I don't know. I'd suspect a lot of it has to do with nutrient partioning.... IE a high carbohydrate and saturated fat diet coupled with 0% exercise. Remember, a 1,000lb man barely even MOVES throughout the day, and eating a vegetable would be like a forbidden thought.

![]() If you just eat garbage it isn't that hard to eat 8000 calories. Just suck down a bunch of milkshakes and cookies. Although he probably doesn't need 8000 calories since he is so sedentary his daily caloric needs would be reduced. And his lbm would be low compared to his overall weight from just laying around. | |

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 116 | I've thought about this too. It simply comes down to LEAN MASS composition. The number I've heard is to add about 40 kcals for every pound of lean mass you pack on. Of course, like wearing a pack pack all day with a couple plates, carrying around extra fat will increase kcals expended. Greater work requires greater energy. Still, any accurate BMR (kcals burned in a seditary state) is based on weight, age, sex AND LEAN MASS COMPOSITION. Ur muscles burn kcals just to exist. No need to even use them. One cannot say the same about Adipose. An added note: Eating 8000 CLEAN kcals is tough as hell. I eat about 4500 clean onse on my bulks, and I find THAT difficult. Eating 8000 unclean kcals is really easy.... 5 or 6 slices of pizza...half box of chips a hoy.... 4 glasses of apple juice. A large bowl of pasta and meatballs alone can be 1500 kcas. Add some bread sticks, olive oil and a pepsi.....

| Pro Stature | Well, I was nearly 600 lbs. and yet I could easily eat an entire pizza and never gain a pound from it. Keep in mind that most people this size or larger run entirely off their fat stores...so everything they eat goes where?...into fat stores. Its one reason really big people lose so much weight so fast at the beginning since they're entire energy is supplied by their adipose tissue.

| IMPC Contestant | He wouldn't need 8000 calories. Fat uses no energy (kcals) as it is stored energy. It's the lean muscle mass (which he probably doesn't have very much of) that burns kcals.
