If you're talking about diet and you're really having trouble with money, you can replace a lot of your protein with oats and save a ton.

replace protein with oats??

I am going to assume that was a typo.

Eggs are 1-1.29 per dozen. Oats are really cheap. Rice is even cheaper. WHey is actually the cheapest (per gram) of any protein source. Milk is also cheap.

Do some research. It can be done.

I was just saying that a lot of people are cutting with like 40-50% protein. If you're in a tight space with money you can easily cut that down to as little as 20%. All the studies say that no more protein is needed after like 0.5g/lb.

There is benefit to higher protein though since your body is so inefficient at using it for energy.

Perhaps the ADA. But to maintain muscle, it's more like 1g/lb at a minimum. I'm at 1.25g/lb and it's probably not enough.

well, if you space it well enough.... maybe you can get by with 1 gram/lbs lean mass... but the FDA and ADA are absolutely useless.

eggs are cheap as hell.

Although I love eggs, I would have to say that as cheap as they are, oatmeal is a lot cheaper.

How many eggs constitute one serving? 3 or 4? Okay, so let's say eggs are $1.89 per dozen. That's $0.47-$0.63 per serving. Not so bad, if you only need a few each day. Not arguing that eggs are expensive at all.

On the other hand, 30 servings of oatmeal, even name brand, are less than $0.10 per serving. I won't argue that oatmeal is more efficient for cutting by any means but cheaper? Yes.

So you're replacing protein with carbs, and basing this upon a study, despite real-world experience that says otherwise?

Didn't think I'd get everyone jumping on me for that one. Since studies can't convince you let me try another way.

Required protein intake is massively overexaggerated. The only protein you "need" to maintain muscle is the amount it takes to rebuild what is broken down on a daily basis. Believe it or not, it is a small amount even in a calorie deficit.

A pound of muscle contains less than 100g of protein (75% water, right?). Now if I ate pure carbs and EFAs with zero protein how much muscle would I lose over a day? If I needed 200g of protein a day that would mean I'd lose 2lbs of muscle a day indefinately. Now that's not right is it? Probably more like a pound or two a week. (200g of protein a week ).

Of course not optimal, but theoretically all you need.

If you're taking in 50% protein, what do you think your body is doing with most of it? Not building muscle, it's using it for energy. All the protein that is being used for energy would be no different than if it were carbs.

Like I said, more is good but not at all necessary.

But you're not taking into account the effect that the carbs are going to have on insulin levels (yes, even low GI carbs) and the reduced lipolysis that will result from the increased insulin levels. That's what I noticed.

The carbs still cause insulin increase that causes storage of more of your fats. More than would've been stored with protein instead of the carbs.

Carbs and protein together cause the greatest insulin increase.
Carbs and fat should always be consumed together and protein alone.

....that's what I was saying. RDA stats from the FDA and ADA are utterly useless anyway. What's the RDI of vitamin C? Something like 50mg for an adult?

yikes. DJohonson, I'll be the first to agree with you protein is overated. Trust me. It is. But it is more im
