Default Binging in long term dieters and bodybuilders. Mental disorder or Body fighting back?

Kind of interesting topic. I have a topic about this on 'that other site' and some people brought up some great points. I was originally trying to get advice on coping with my binging problem. The other night I 'snapped' and ate about 1600 calories in the course of a half hour (all clean foods, but calories are calories). I was originally blaming it on a mental disorder, but... is it really?

Could uncontrollable binges like this be caused by the crashing of certain hormones? (IE, leptin), or could my bingest be set off by carb cravings and being depleted of glycogen for long periods of time?

One thing I learned about asking about this, is that I'm not the only one who goes through it. For 'big losers' and apparently other people too, once you get past a certain 'set point' of weight/leanness, appetite starts raging out of control as your body is fighting to grow to the size it wants to be.

Interesting topic skelooth, I used to be overweight myself but I never have had the urge to binge or 'snap' since then.

I think the way I deal with it is I have a set diet for myself and the structure of it helps me from having urges to snap. I'm pretty rigid about what I eat now, probably too rigid in fact, but since I was overweight as a kid I have issues with being fat again.

But I don't know if binging itself is a mental disorder, what you have to figure out why you like to binge, there may be some underlying unhappiness issue that food helps fulfill. The food is just an outlet IMO.

Since you were overweight at one point, did you find yourself getting hungrier as you got leaner? For me, this is the third time I've hit 195lbs then lost any type of control over my hunger.

I don't think it's an emotional issue, because there's nothing I'm really 'hung up' about. But of course the subconcious mind works in mysterious ways

hah, i did that this weekend. It was so bad I haven't even posted about it....

Put it this way, this morning I was up a full 10lbs.... I'm BAD... which is why I decided to start a new fat loss journal and get refocused on my fitness goals.

This weekend I ate a loaf of bread, a jar of natty pb, a jar of marshmallow fluff, 6 donuts, a meat lover's pizza, 6 cupcakes..... uhhh, yeah, that all ends now. I'm banning myself from all sugar and unclean foods. It's back to chicken breast, broccoli, and olive oil for most of my meals.

No, this was a long time ago in high school and I was OCD about losing the weight and did it wrong and knew nothing about nutrition then... basically ended up in a starvation type diet and went from over 200 down to 130 lbs.

Cortisol can definitely stimulate the appetite. You ever seen how fat people on long term prednisone get? (They get really fat because of the artifically high cortisol levels not linked to energy needs is making them eat too much)

Making sure the fat oxidation from your *own adipose* covers the dietary energy deficit means cortisol secretion is controlled.

If you ate 3200 calories and burned 4000 calories you need 800 calories to be successfully transfered from adipose to muscle cells or else you risk the beginnings of a cortisol build-up.

I did the same thing and basically lost 20 lbs in a month Luckily I educated myself eventually and learned how to do things correctly.
