I just read an article in Men's Health (yeah, yeah, I know. But they are right sometimes). It cited a recent study that that proved that too much Vitamin C can cause kidney stones. It recommended 500mg per day. I take 1000 mg per day. I figure with the workouts I need more than the average Joe.

Why so much Vitamin C?

It was just recommended by the cutting program I was following. 3g a day.

1000mg Upon waking and post workout.

What do YOU recommend for me then?

If you are doing this for a few months, I don't care.

Uhm.. ok.. I take 1000 mg's ... twice a day... once in the AM & again in the PM ... I'm aware that too much Vitamin C can cause diarrhea ... (I never spell that ryght)... Then I just heard another comment that the body can only absorb so much at one tyme so any excess amounts was just overkill... I haven't heard about the kidney stones tho..

Had to google stuff real quick...

http://chemo.net/newpage35.htm - Kidney Stones is a myth..

"Vitamin C

It was once believed to cause kidney stones, but experts now say there is no solid evidence of dangerous side effects from vitamin C. High doses can produce stomachaches and diarrhea."

http://www.acu-cell.com/vitc.html

http://www.ehow.com/how_3952_absorb-vitamin-c.html

Actually, after reading the information posted at those websytes.. I may cut back to one a day... or wait until I combine them with Vitamins A & E ...

Peace..~G

That is what I have heard. If you take too much of most vitamins that your body only uses what it need and the rest is useless to you and passes through, so in other words you get diarrhea (hell, I can't spell it either! )
But, that is what I heard too. Plus you can always get too much of what you think is a good thing.
Good Luck to you AYung. :bigthumbu

GDD, supposedly the kidney stone problem was from a new study. The article did not cite its source, so I can't say more than what I have posted. I have taken up to 3000 mg of Vitamin C for several months with no problems in the past. That seems like an excessive amount to take on an ongoing basis.

Yes, I believe this is true of all water soluable vitamins. If your body doesn't need the particular vitamin it is passed through in elimination. Fat soluable vitamins do collect in your body and can reach toxic levels. Vitamin E and Vitamin A come to mind. It is also recommended that men not take vitamins with iron in them. We don't need as much iron as woman do and we get lots of it in the meats that we eat.

I think it is a good idea to take a break from your vitamins every so often just to make sure you use up anything that could be stored. When I take my week off from the gym every 8-10 weeks I go off all supplementation just to be safe.

Have you thought about adding 6g of fish oils to your supplement plan?

Or protein powder?

I take 2 scoops of ON Whey for part of the first meal. And 1.5 scoops for part of my post workout.

I also take Udo's 3-6-9 Oil Blend for all the meals except for two.

I've taken 1000-2000 mg of Vitamin C/day and never had any problems with kidney stones.

Make sure you drink plenty of water, that helps reduce the risk of getting them.

What exactly are kidney stones anyways?

I drink around 5 litres a day I believe. I am also taking creatine, so more is important.

It's a hard mass that forms in the kidney. My cousin gets them, she says they are extremely painful.

bump to this...oral glutamine doesn't do a damn thing. Pick up some Xtend or something, you'll love it.

Glutamine is worthless unless they're glutamine peptides. Pure L-Glutamine is destroyed during digestion.
