The mercury levels in tuna are grossly overrated.

If you do that for a couple of decades you could have problems. Albacore is supposed to have more mercury than than the chunk white so if you are concerned, you could use the chunk white. I also buy canned salmon and mix some of that in with my tuna salad. Any fish can have mercury and pcbs so I only eat fish (besides tuna) two times per week.

both of the above posts are accurate. I've had times during the summer when I eat tuna for almost every meal during the daytime periods due to convinence. I just wouldn't recommend it for long term use.

I eat a can per day without any problems> I also eat some Talipia and the rest is from chicken and whey.

I am in the process of undergoing a long-running mercury detox. It lasted from last november 'til about April 15 or so. I have not seen many benefits from doing so, except that my knees stopped hurting. I do believe that over the longer term this will have been very helpful to overall health. Reactions to mercury are very individual. One person can have 4 cans a day for 10 years and show no sign of toxicity whereas for someone else, 2 cans a day and after 5 years health problems are piliing on. Heavy metals should be on top of anyone's hit list as culprits for when health problems arise.

Make sure it's chunk light and not chunk white.

chunk lite ~ 0.118 ppm
chunk white ~ 0.353 ppm

I have at least one can a day, often more.

you beat me to this..... chunk light has the least mercury of any tuna.... Yellowfin tuna is the best tasting though..in my opinion...

people probably get more mercury from the fillings in their teeth than from tuna.... It is mostly a concern if you are pregnant, or a child...

You can't be too careful now adays.

For example, I stopped breathing long ago when I found out the air was so polluted due to smog. I also stopped drinking water due to acid rain runoff getting into the drinking water supply. And don't get me started on eating, which I also gave up long ago due to the high levels of pesticides in virtually everything we eat! I don't touch anything for all the germs and bacteria we are constantly exposed too that may get on my skin. And speaking of skin, I refuse to go outside and risk contracting melanoma cancer, and I don't stay indoors either since the air in our homes is worse than outside. Sex is a huge no-no due to STD's, and masturbating will cause me to go blind. I dare not move south due to the hurricanes and if I live up north I may freeze to death in the winter. So I think I will just stay where I am and do what has worked for me so far! :fingersxd

J/K guys.......point is, unless you are eating tons of tuna, there are other things out there that will get you quicker than a fish. Just my .02 cents

I mix mine with pineapple tidbits. Low-gi, good carbs, quick, all cans.

I eat it straight out the can baby.... drained of the nasty tuna water of course.

Ditto to the above.

Chunk Lite Tuna is actually made from much smaller Tuna. Although the mercury fear is overrated, the tuna to watch for, for those worried about it, is Albacore.

Albacore are MUCH larger fish which live much longer and have the potential to absorb many more toxins from the water than the small fish that go in the chunk lite cans.

So eat up!

Really.. I was told it was a food chain thing.. it starts with the smaller fish eating insects.. the insects are how mercury gets into the fish.... then the bigger fish that eats them ingests the mercury along with them, and the cycle continues till you get to tuna.. which are HUGE..... Albacore especialy which is why their content is the highest.. it is because they are on the top of the food chain, and they eat tons of fish....
