Pollution from coal burning plants contributes to a very large amount of the industrial mercury pollution. Once in the atmosphere, mercury is widely spread and can circulate for years, accounting for its wide-spread distribution. This airborne spread is actually how industrial mercury gets into the ocean.

Also, industrial accidents in areas such as Minamata Bay, Japan have contributed to contaminating large areas.

Scientists have also found many significant natural sources of mercury in the environment including volcanos and thermal springs.

All of these sources, whether by air, or by drainage over land eventually lead to the ocean.

The longer creatures live in waters that are contaminated, the longer they absorb the toxic chemicals from the water. Therefore the larger, and older fish are exposed much longer than the smaller and younger fish.

Airborne pollution is truly the main cause of non-natural mercury contamination in the ocean waters.

- all that said... there is much debate as to the real danger from this polution.

There is no doubt that the industrial accidents such as Minamata Bay were devastating and highly toxic to fish and humans. But, scientists have records going back to pre-historic time showing that overall mercury levels in areas of the ocean not contaminated by a particular event, have been basically the same, or varied within a set range, for 10's of thousands of years. Thus indicating that natural mercury levels in the ocean have been there forever, and will be there forever, posing no real threat.

Regardless....Unless you are pregnant female.... eat all the chunk lite tuna you want.. they dont get big enough, and don't live long enough to absorb enough Mercury from the water to cause you problems.....

It's probably still safe for a pregnant female to eat chunk lite tuna several times per week, but just to be on the safe side, why bother during that time anyway. She would probably rather have ice cream and pickles anyway.

check this out... this is from a post by TCO... It backs up what I learned before... about the food chain thing...

How does mercury from power plants wind up in fish?

When mercury is deposited into the water, microorganisms help convert it to methylmercury, a highly toxic form of mercury. Small organisms and plants take up the mercury as they feed. As animals higher up the food chain eat those plants and organisms, they, too, take in methylmercury. The process continues, with levels of mercury increasing, up the food chain. This process is known as bioaccumulation. Fish higher in the food chain, such as sharks and swordfish, have much higher mercury concentrations than fish lower on the food chain.

Anyone who hates tuna, but likes the high cheap protein content. will love this trick if they try it... I used to love tuna but after choking down, can after can of it, I can barely eat it without gagging...

I wish someone else would try it so they can back up what I am saying.... It is really good...

OMG!!! You're right!!! It does taste great!! Better than plain ol' tuna straight of the can. I'm laughing here cause I honestly was gonna get pissed if it didnt taste good...I don't like wasting protein!! LoL

I tried it with 1 scoop of vanilla cream whey protein powder, vanilla extract, 1pkt of Tangerine/grapefruit crystal light....cold water and ice. (strained the can of tuna and gave it a bit of a rinse.) Blended the hell out of it...turned out nice and frothy and creamy...had an orange creamsicle flavor and didnt taste of tuna at all!! :nosthumbs

Pretty good stuff I must say...gonna have this in the mornings!

Never thought I'd try something like this...glad I did.

Thanks for sharing Bubba.

No problem.... thank you for trusting me... and backing me up on it...

Most people think it is a prank.. then once they finaly try it they can't believe how good it is.. If you don't have vanila whey a teaspoon of vanila extract works too to give it that creamsicle flavor... throw in some ice like you said too to make it nice and cold...

Thanks EME for the schooling on how fish become contaminated with mercury....
not often do I use the word "flabbergasted"

yet here I am overwhelmed with surprise, full of wonder, and bewildered.
