both

energy in vs. energy is out is a general guidline.... but composition of tissue is hugely dependent upon how and what one consumes.

I can give an example, but i don't really feel like typing right now

I could give an example, but I'd be labled as a low carb radical

Fat gain is highly dependent on:

Energy Needs

and

Hormones

Hormones like cortisol and insulin have ADVERSE effects on nutrient partitioning.

I have this idea in my head...

Sugar causes fat and fat doesn't.

Relative to calories in and calories out. It may not make sense, but it is a good rule to follow.

I'd be more inclined to believe that overall, carbs cause fat than fat itself in my experience. I can eat deep fried shit all day and not gain an ounce of fat - but as soon as carbs enter the equation, stuff changes. Unless it's brown rice or oats, I see differences.

Trans fats can only be stored as body fat when consumed.

Fat gain is caused by a variety of factors and a variety of combinations of those same factors.

Yeah... energy in vs energy out is definately a good guide line...

However think of this:

Your maintainence is 3000 calories a day.

On one day you eat clean nutritious foods like chicken, brown rice, olive oil, and salmon to make up your 3000 calories.

The next day you eat exactly 3000 calories worth of McDonalds, and Donut King.

Think there's a difference?

That is one of the causes. Let's assume you eat a nice meal of white rice and some donuts. Not only is that a high carb meal, it is also EXTREMELY high GI and loaded with TRANS FATS to boot. Let's assume you take in three meals @ 600 calds each of the aforementioned combo. During the day, you'll take in 1800 cals. If you couple this with someone who takes in more cals, however, his foods come from low GI sources and HEALTHY fats, he'll be able to eat more, be satiated, AND lose more weight. To top it off, his cardiovascular state will be off the charts, while your 'lazyness' level will be "getting off the couch to get food" hard to do.

I agree
there are a lot of people who say "energy in < energy out = fat loss" which is true, but there are ways to stay satiated and make it easier on yourself while in a caloric defecit.

A bostom cream is 350 calories, surprisingly 9g of protein! I love donuts.... LOVE.

White rice with donut sauce sounds good too

I dont buy it. To a point, it REALLY comes down to your macronutrient split. You can eat 4000 kcals in protein and not gain an ounce, while 4000 grams in carbs will likely have you gaining in no time. That why we, as fitness freaks, balance all three. All three nutrients play their part. One is essential for lean mass (protein), one is essential for insulin (carbs), and one is essential for hormonal and chemical balances within the body (fat).
