Default THE NEW, THE STRANGE, and THE HEALTHY?

"THE NEW, THE STRANGE, and THE UGLY"

So now that I am out in the real "Working World" I have the beautiful ability as an American (health concious one, at that) to buy and consume the foods of my choice. With this right, I believe I also have an obligation to leave no stone unturned. With the fit individual in mind, I will make a weekly installment of "THE NEW, THE STRANGE, and THE HEALTHY?"

Each entry will highlight a healthy, and somewhat obscure food which I am willing to at least try... and possibly intigrate into my nutritional plan. I will discuss the taste, the background, the macro/micronutrient content, and dietetic placement for the highlighted food.

Beginning later tonight.....

What a cool idea! Be sure to take pictures of anything interesting, and list where to get it.

Thumbs up Re: THE NEW, THE STRANGE, and THE HEALTHY?

Week 1 Food: "Kefir"

Kefir is a yogurt-like dairy product made from the fermentation of grains and bacteria. It has a similar consistency to a rich full-fat milk, or a very watered down plain yogurt. It's taste is a bit sour, and slightly carbonated (very slight). It was originally an alcoholic beverage, but due to more efficient production processes, fermentation time is cut down, leading to a lower alcohol level.

Nutritional Profile for Low-Fat Kefir
Serving Size: 1 cup (8floz)
Fat- 1.5 g
Carbs- 7 g
Sugar- 7 g
Protein- 14 g

-----Dustin's Evaluation and Thoughts-----

Sooo..... it doesn't take a genius to see the merits associated with this food. I mean, as far as non-supplement milk protein goes, you're not going to find a better source than this BESIDES cottage cheese. I think the benefits given by the bacteria in this product, though, make the 3-5 extra grams of lactose worth-while. I know a lot of people who CANNOT STAND cottage cheese (i'm not going to blame them, it is nasty), and these people may find sanctuary with Kefir. If you like that "bite" yogurt has, you'll like this stuff. Granted, the kefir I had was unflavored, I added 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 3 splenda packets to 2 cups of this stuff, and I must say.... tasty tasty! I Enjoyed the gratification of washing down 4 tbsp peanut butter with this stuff, and give it the big time thumbs up for anyone looking to both lose or gain weight.

Will this food stay in my diet? Let's just say I bought a gallon, and already put the splenda+vanilla in there. A new pre-bed tradition.

That's a better profile than milk.

Nice first installment.
