Default microwaving yam

when you microwave yams how many holes do you poke and do you poke the hole right thru the yams? and do you have to rap them up or can you just throw them in there, also how long should i leave them in there (small yams)

I never poke a hole in them. Haven't seen any need.

Even a small yam will probably take 20-30 minutes. It depends on how powerful your microwave is.

Just keep checking it with a gentle squeeze and when you feel it getting soft and squishy then it's good to go.

I don't poke holes in them when microwaving, but I'll cut about an 1/8" off each end with a knife. I don't wrap them in anything, just place them on a microwaveable plate.

yeah after one too many explosions in my poor microwave, i've resorted to poking like a zillion holes in my potatoes. They do take a long ass time though, but much faster than that confounded conventional oven...

I cut slices in mine when I microwave mine and they take about ten minutes. I have read that microwaving them denatures them though I can't remember where I read this though and I don't really know if a microwave would denature something any more than baking it would...anybody know about this kind of stuff?

Oh, and while we're on the topic of yams/sweet potatoes--Baked Sweet Potato Fries Kick Ass!

I love baked sweet potatoes!!!! I learned my lession today of why poking holes is important. I was cooking a bunch of sweet potatoes for tomorrow and I opened the oven to check on them. I went to turn one with a fork and it just popped up and scared the shit outta me. I forgot to poke holes in em.
