Default great article in the ny times...fatties, former fatties, take note

shit this place is dead lately

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/13/ma...13obesity.html

"This is typical of people who have lost weight — not only a lot of weight, as Janet has, but even a little weight. According to Rudolph Leibel, an obesity researcher at Columbia University who was involved in the discovery of the first human gene implicated in obesity, if you take two nonobese people of the same weight, they will require different amounts of food depending on whether or not they were once obese. It goes in precisely the maddening direction you might expect: formerly fat people need to eat less than never-fat people to maintain exactly the same weight. In other words, a 150-pound woman who has always weighed 150 might be able to get away with eating, say, 2,500 calories a day, but a 150-pound woman who once weighed more — 20 pounds more, 200 pounds more, the exact amount doesn’t matter — would have to consume about 15 percent fewer calories to keep from regaining the weight. The change occurs as soon as the person starts reducing, Leibel said, and it “is not proportional to amount of weight lost, and persists over time.”"

"Gordon likes to explain his hypothesis of what gut microbes do by talking about Cheerios. The cereal box says that a one-cup serving contains 110 calories. But it may be that not everyone will extract 110 calories from a cup of Cheerios. Some may extract more, some less, depending on the particular combination of microbes in their guts. “A diet has a certain amount of absolute energy,” he said. “But the amount that can be extracted from that diet may vary between individuals — not in a huge way, but if the energy balance is affected by just a few calories a day, over time that can make a big difference in body weight.”

Interesting only for the fact that it helps further prove my point that you can be genetically prone to obesity.

But what this article really comes down to, is that everyone's metabolism is different, and we've known that now for a very long time.

I have to eat ridiculously small amounts of food to lose weight.... :\

Edit: PS, it has been kinda dead around here.

I found the former fat person thing particularly intriguing

and the other problem is metabolic resistance - if I cut calories too much, my body throws itself into starvation mode and holds onto everything (i used to be anorexic and bulimic, so my body got quite accustomed to random periods of starvation).

Its also a sign that your metabolisim is technically superior, making more efficient use of your food. I have friends that eat nothing but sugar, salt, and soda all day and night long, never exercise, and play video games, and can't gain weight. If we had nuclear war, they'd be the first ones to starve to death, while Skel and I would survive off our fat for a few months.

I find now, I can bulk - and gain good muscle mass - on 2500 calories a day, whilst my ectomorph brother is having trouble trying to gain on 4000 calories a day. His power to weight ratio is higher, and he routinely throws around just as much - if not more - weight than I do, yet I gain from eating nothing. It's great.

i gain from eating nothing too. My arms are over 18" and the majority of my 'weight lifting career' i've been trying to cut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just keep getting bigger, and it's so hard for me to get leaner.

Change your diet somehow. Experiment again. I've dropped about 17lb in four weeks, and it was all water and fat. My legs look a little leaner and they've dropped about half a centimetre I spose, but aside from that I've lost no size from my arms, chest, shoulders or forearms according to the tape - it's all been waist. About 2/12 or 3 inches in that time. And for the first time in my life, I'm starting to see legitimate abs.

I think about 99% of the population would rather be your ectomorph brother. Who doesn't like eating tons of food with abandon? I sure do...wish I could and stay lean.

I definitely enjoy my ectomorphic abilities. I can eat cake, ice cream, you name it, and I'll stay lean. I eat considerably well regardless, but it's nice knowing that getting together with my friends and eating some pizza has little to no bearing on my bodyfat. No worries

yup...a huge part of staying lean is cals in versus cals out. I maintain on about 2400 cals myself (wt: 145lbs)...just so happens eating healthy foods is much more satisfying than eating cake and ice cream.

granted, i had some ice cream today...breyer's light butter pecan. delicious!

I'm about the same weight (142-144), but my maintenence is closer to 3,300-3,500.

I wanted ice cream earlier.... but instead I drove right past the ice cream parlor to the grocery store and bought yellow onions, green onions, green beans, carrots, peaches, corn, portabella mushrooms, and some chicken thighs. I agree, eating healthy foods is much more satisfying, but regardless, there's half a cake in my fridge right now

Yeah the article explains a lot. I used to weigh 275 then i got down to 165 and now i am at 185. I dont really have to eat much to maintain. I also gain mass between 2500/3000 easily.

Well, I found a lot of low calorie alternatives to what I used to like to eat - you know, Coke Zero, low carb/cal ice cream, low carb/cal chocolate - they all taste almost identical to the original. In fact, I find the originals too sweet. Aside from Coke Zero, these have become my 'cheat' foods that I eat once a month. I can eat tons of food without abandon - but it's normally stuff like broccoli or meat. Give yourself four weeks, and that shit is normal. You don't miss the other crap.
