Question fiber.... cholesterol... bile???

I learned about this a long time ago but can't seem to find any information on it now... I get plenty of fiber in my diet, now I just need to know what it's doing inside my body

what is fiber's role in lowering cholesterol? I recall it having something to do with bile.... someone clue me in here! Thanks

I am not really sure about its role in lowering cholesterol, but I know it binds free radicals and other unwanted things in your lower intestines and colon. They processes may be similar.

A high fiber intakes can actually increase the amount of nutrients being lost to excretion. Fiber can and does actually prevent the enzymes from being able to reach nutrients, and they simply pass through unabsorbed.

On the good side, higher fiber intakes may reduce fat absorption by about 3 percent.

A caveate to a low fat high fiber diet also is lowered test levels.

Default Re: fiber.... cholesterol... bile???

Sorry a few months later but hope this helps.

"Foods rich in viscous fibers (oat bran, barley, and legumes) lower blood cholesterol by binding with bile acids and thereby increasing the excretion. Consequently, the liver must use its cholesterol to make new bile acids. In addition the bacterial by products of fiber fermentation in the colon also inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the liver. The net result is lower blood cholesterol."
