Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 5 | Went to the doctor's today just for a checkup, he noticed I'd lost a fair bit of weight since I last saw him 12months ago, and of course was interested as to what my diet was like... I told him and then he commented on something which was supprising to me. He told me that Whey protein and protein shakes were bad for my health, and that I shouldn't be taking more than 90g of protein per day, as it could lead to liver disease and heart failure. I told my parents this like Im telling you all as I thought it humorous... they didn't take it this way, and want me to stop eating all my proteins.. especially the shakes. Can anyone here find some sort of a reference to something kinda offical that completely disregard any of the concerns my doctor and parents have raised? Cheers, -dton edit: should mention, Im currently taking between 190 - 210g of protein a day, 60grams of which comes from protein shakes. |

| IMPC Contestant | This is because doctors (imo) are idiots. My doctor is fully supportive of my diet and supplements. Heck, I even showed her that B-5 helped remove some of my acne and recommended it to her for others. Simply google high protein intake and find studies. It CAN lead to kidney problems if you don't drink enough water, however, it has nothing to do w/ ur heart.

It's not that they are idiots per'se, The problem is that they are not sports nutritionists. General practitioners can only go by what they were taught in medical school. Dton, I'm sorry about your doctor being uneducated in sports nutrition. 90g of protein a day is low for an athlete.

| IMPC Contestant | Oh, if you go to the ADA's site (american dietetics association) they recommend strength trained athletes gets 2g of protein per KG (I believe something like that) EDIT: It's on this page: http://www.eatright.org/cps/rde/xchg...0_ENU_HTML.htm

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 6 | The comments in bold are from an RD, a medical nutritional therapist! My responses are in italics. Not all animal proteins are a complete protein except for foul eggs. That's absolutely untrue. All animal proteins contain the full complement of amino acids... all the essential and non-essential amino acids. Maybe what you mean to say is that eggs have the highest bioavailability of all animal proteins. That would be true. Soy proteins also mimic the female hormone estrogen, thus inhibiting the human body to produce more estrogen, therefore lowers the risk of breast cancer and bone loss associated with osteoporosis. Soy protein can be very dangerous to some humans, especially those with thyroid disease and breast cancer. Even Dr. Andrew Weil says to avoid soy in those cases. Soy may fuel breast cancer growth. Soy does not prevent the production of estrogen. It simply binds with estrogen receptors. I can't imagine a 300 pound football player consuming 300+ grams a protein per day. Why not? For athletes the recommended protein consumption is 1 gram of protein per POUND of bodyweight. For a degreed nutritionist, your information is beyond wrong.

| Der Leutnant | that's blasphemy. i used to be anti-protein when i first started lifting. i used to search the internet for all sorts of shit trying to find a decent argument.....finally i realized there weren't any. the only thing i ever found was a "nutritionist" claiming it was bad for the kidneys. if you're familiar with protected and unprotected titles, you would know that any schmuck can call himslef a "nutritionist"

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 200 | It's pretty much common knowledge that most doctors don't know anything about general diet, nutrition and health, or physical fitness. All they know is how to treat specific illnesses.

Maybe you should try going to medical school and we'll see who the idiot is... And weak-minded lazy people have made THEMSELVES fat in this country, so please don't go blaming doctors who have dedicated themselves to helping others for this trend of obesity. Everyone has different ideas on nutrition. Just like training, different things work for different people...trying to apply one concept universally just won't work. If you've found something that works for you, stick to it. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they're completely wrong, and it certainly isn't grounds to discount the service that physicians provide for us.
