Default Do You HAVE To Stuff Your Face In Order To Grow?

I'll start by admitting I've not been to the gym in about 2 months and I've shrunk from 238lbs down to 210lbs, with bodyfat stayin at around the same level so I know that I've lost mainly muscle.

I'm 18 years old, 5,10" and around 17-18% Bodyfat

The reason I stopped for that long is the fact that I was eating SO much every day that I just constantly felt bloated and sick and it was very uncomfortable.

For example, for each meal I'd probably have around 2 and a half chicken breasts & 2 jacket potatoes with a glass of milk or 200g of brown rice with 2 cans of tuna & a glass of milk.

Now just looking at this I'm actually thinking to myself that it's not much at all if I want to gain mass but it made me feel bloated constantly as I said above.

I want to get back into training but don't want to be walking around feeling like shit all the time because of how much I eat. I was wondering if you HAVE to eat as much as the articles, magazines etc say in order to gain size. Would I be alright just eating for example, 1 and a half chicken breasts, 1 jacket potato & a glass of water instead of 2 and a half chicken breasts, 2 jacket potatoes & a glass of milk?

As I said, I don't want to be stuffing my face just so that I can gain size, because that takes the fun out of this and yes I DO want it to be fun, I don't want it to seem like a chore.

you sound like you have a few things going on IMO.

First, how often do you eat? You might want to eat more often. Every 2 hours if possible.

Second, try adding a lot more fat into your diet. Oils and nuts can be the best thing to help make super lean gains. Adding 1 tbls of oil at eat meal will add 800 kcals by the end of the day.

Third (and most contravercial), add some moderate junk into your diet. NO SUGAR AND NO TRANSFATS. Things like pizza are actually not as bad as people think. Pizza is a slow source of carbs, whey and casein. It will pack on mass like anything else. Just replace a meal/day with 2 slices of pizza. It is an easy 600 kcals.

Fourth (although I'm not a fan of it), be more seditary.

Fifth, your training might need some work. Anabolic response can be increased through a better routine... but I can't help you with the specifics.

Sixth, 3am meal.

Of all these suggestions... I would BY FAR reccomend the second one the most. Healthy fats at every meal has improved many aspects of my life as it relates to fitness and wellbeing.

Excellent answer DJ. And Pump 5000 cals is too many for you anyway unless your EXTREMELY active like working out 5 days a week and doing sports on top of it. At 210 4000 cals should be sufficient to add lean muscle mass over time. If fact some argue the 20 cals x LBM for lean gains which would be around 3500 cals daily for you.

Wow. Another relic of the BB.com Douche Patrol.

Some of us - i.e. myself - can gain off of 2600 calories a day. But nothing packs on mass like pizza, as the golfer above mentioned.

Start eating and stop being soft, unless you want to stay small.

If 238lbs @ 17-18%BF & 5,10" is small I'd love to see your idea of big.

Anyway, thanks DJ and everyone else who gave a decent answer, I'll definitely be doing that TBLSP of oil thing, I'd never thought of that. From tomorrow I'm back at the gym so hopefully I'll start enjoying it again. Take care all & thanks again.

I agree with DJ. He has made some good points.

You probably are just eating too much at one time causing the bloat. Other possibilities are lactose and wheat intorerance are two that come to mind.

Definitely try the more calorie dense oils and 6 small meals per day first.

I was thinking about the question some more... you may also be eating too much protein. I can't really know, but it is just a possibility. Eating too much protein will DEF stop you from gaining and DEF make you feel bloated as crap.

Remember protein is a necessity, but the difference between a bulk and cut is simply your energy intake (carbs and fat).

Which is it, Vanchatron? 238, or 210? You may have been 238lb. You are now 210lb. Nearly 30lb difference. You've lost 30lb of muscle. I'd call that small. Hell, I was a shade under 240lb until 6 weeks ago, at 5'10". I'm now floating around 215lb. Almost all of that was fat. At 240lb I never considered myself huge. So yes, at 18% bodyfat, 240lb is small.

youre not fooling anyone with those numbers kid, youve posted pics you know very well youre far from bodybuilding-big.

btw I would suggest making easier meals. look for different kind of protein powders (casein, milk protein, isolates) or cottage cheese, milk and blend with a carb source (oats, grits). try carb cycling and in your low carb days, snack with peanuts, walnuts or cashew throughout the day. (try cottage cheese with walnuts and honey - delicious)

It might be envy i woude love to say, hey i cant eat this mutch. but im around 220Lbs.20-30%BF and i have to go around hungry all day.
course i only eat 5-6 meals pr. day. and thouse small meals with low fat just dosent satisfie my hunger.

So dude i envy you. you get to eat your self full all the time. i only get full when i dont follow the diet. and thats not nice.

but any way i think if you go with the olive oile and nuts. you will be all right. and its good to hear your back in the gym
