Cool Dextrose vs Fructose

Well, I've been using Dextrose (corn based sugar) for my post workout shakes for a whyle... but I'm down to my last 2 bags...

I noticed that my local health food store doesn't carry Dextrose, but they do have Fructose ... (fruit based sugar) ...

From my understanding... I believe that Fructose, taken after a workout, restores the blood-sugar levels in the liver... Whereas, Dextrose, taken after a workout restores the blood-sugar levels in the body's muscles...

If thys is correct, then I can't interchange the two... even if I consume oats with it...

Are my thoughts on thys correct... or can I go ahead & purchase some Fructose??

Peace..~G

yes, using fructose is fine. A lot of people use apple juice PWO.

The thing with fructose is that it will fill liver glycogen before it fills muscle clycogen, but yes it will fill BOTH.

People shy away from fructose while on a cut because liver glycogen can imped fat oxidation. (Endurance activities fuel themselves off of liver glycogen before switching to fat oxidation)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I THINK fructose tends to refill your liver glycogen stores, while dextrose is almost identical to the compenents of muscles glycogen.

I am curious about this too. I use gatorade powder, which is dextrose and sucrose...

It's not that dextrose is identical to muscle glycogen, it's that dextrose is identical to glucose which is what ALL carbs are broken down to eventually, which is why dextrose spikes insulin so rapidly. Diabetics can actually buy 'glucose tabs' to take when having a low blood sugar. The main ingredient? Dextrose!

My understanding is that we take dextrose pwo for two reasons, 1: it spikes insulin quickly, and 2: it does not get stored as liver glycogen.

While fructose will be stored as liver glycogen, it will still help replenish muscles afaik. Fructose is 100% fine if you're not trying to cut.

oh, and why would you BUY fructose???? If you want fructose eat/drink fruit. Heck, even household granulated sugar is half fructose.

I'm not sure what the story is with sucrose.

why not use maltodextrin? NOW sells 5lb tubs. It's called "carbo gain"

Or you can use pixie stix, no joke, look at their ingredients, it's dextrose and food coloring.

I generally prefer Low to Med GI post workout too...

But... that's a whole different topic! LOL...

If you're going HI GI... go with Dextrose if possible......

Incidentally, Dextrose and Glucose are the same thing.
Maltodextrin is actually the sugar that comes from Corn starch.

If you don't have pure Dextrose....... Drink a GatorAde or Similar Drink.

There is actually substantial science supporting the use of drinks like GatorAde post workout. The main sugar source in GatorAde is Sucrose, which is half Dextrose ( Glucose ) and half Fructose.

However, Gatorade also contains sodium which is an important component in the Glucose/Sodium transport system. Ingestion of sodium with glucose has been shown to significantly increase the uptake into the muscle cells of both glucose and water.

Personally, when bulking I prefer Whey and Milk post workout because I want the extra calories and protein, and it seems to work well enough for me... but, that's just me.

I've experimented with Optimum's After Max post workout, and I have been pleased with the results.

I believe I'm going to use After Max post workout when I start cutting for my next competition in the Spring and have to drop the dairy.

But when in doubt, or if you don't have any fancy post workout mix available... just drink a good ole' Gatorade. It will do the trick.

I usually use whatever water is left over from my workout for my post workout shake and I use both dextrose & oats in my protein shake... I figure the dextrose will spike my insulin & then by the tyme the oats kick in... I won't have a dextrose crash.. But ya ryght, that's a whole different topic..

I guess you guys are sayin' I don't even need the dextrose... just protein powder & oats.. huh??

Peace..~G

Imo, the perfect pwo concoction:

Whole grain carb (oats are good, but I like potato)
1-2 servings of fruit
whey
milk

A little fructose is a very good idea post workout for a few reasons, but I would not be consuming large amounts of ISOLATED fructrose.

Don't confuse the ingredients of my post workout SHAKE with my post workout MEAL...

In the shake, I use protein powder, dextrose (1 scoop) & oats (2/3 cup) ..

When I get home, I have dinner .. Tuna, Rice, Peas & some Canola oil...

I'm only worried about substituting Dextrose with Fructose in my post workout shake..

Peace..~G

Not a good idea at all. Instead of the dex, try the results from only oats, or oats/fruit/milk as your carbs and see if you notice a difference. Since making the transition about a year ago, the difference has been so much better.

Truth be told.. I thynk I've done it all...

Protein powder & dextrose
Protein powder & oats
Protein powder & oats & maltodextrin
Protein powder & oats & dextrose
Protein powder & oats & maltodextrin & dextrose

Honestly... I really can't tell you the difference in any of the above combinations... I was growing lyke a weed when I was trying any of the above...

The thyng I lyke about my dextrose & oats combo is that - with my protein added .. the carbs add up to a 2:1 - carb to protein ratio.. which I've read is ideal for post workout...

My friend had me thynking I would gain 20 pounds overnyght with the maltodextrin, but that crap was so difficult to shake & drink.. I'm glad I had a strainer in my leaky BB.Com shaker cup... (I've switched to a tupperware bottle and I wrote IronMASS on it with a magic marker.. *D

Peace..~G

Here are a few of the PW combinations I've done:

whey + grape juice
whey + grape juice, oats
whey + oats
whey + oats + banana

I've made gains on all of the above, and really couldn't a difference with any of them either. Those are just the PW meal, then I'd have a PPW meal about an hour later.

btw grape juice has a high fructose to glucose ratio (approximately two to one for purple, however only one to one for white)
