| Pro Stature | hey guys. I've counted calories ever since i got serious about working out and stuff. But I'm a boxer and my amount of muscle isn't what I'm really worried at this point. I just need to maintain and no go over/under 5 more lbs. Is counting calories a must? If I just eat lean protein through all meals and carbs slightly throughout the day but most at workout times and eat 2-3 hours and still maintain my weight weekly, is this good and I won't need to count? |

my anser is: yes and no. as long as you know what you are eating. I eat a 350-650 kcal meal EVERY 2 hours depending on the time of day and my goals. I know a cup of oats is 300kcals, 1/2 cup dry rice is 300 kcals, 1 tbls EVOO is 115, and 4 oz of lean meat is 160 kcals. That is all you really need to know. With that, you can put together a great meal with proper ratios. I used to be very anal about it, but then i realized the number of kcals I burn daily varies by up to 1500 depending on my activity levels and time i spend awake. Hence eathing every two hours instead of trying to reach a special "Kcal daily total." If i'm mass gaining and very active (like right now) it is 650 every 2 hours. If I am seditary and cutting, it is 350 every 2 hours. Nuff said.

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 176 | for optimum results yes. would, or could you get great results without counting calories. absolutly.. if you are going into a bodybuilding contest than it is definatly 100% a must. in your case you could get by just fine by making sure first that you get enough protein, and staying away from junk food. and then just paying attention to your weight, and how you look in the mirror... if you are putting on too much weight cut back slightly on calories, or up your cardio.... if you don't feel you are progressing, eat a little more at each meal. |

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 0 | So DJ, then if I was only up for 12 hours as opposed to 16, you would say that my daily calories should be lower. Given my activity was the same. And if I was up for 20 hours, calories should be higher? |

| Pro Stature | when youre awake youre probably doing more things= more activity, so yes you need more cals ![]() When i was in school id just follow the same routine: breakfast with moderate protein, high carbs and a bit less fat. lunch with high carb, moderate pro and mod fat. (school lunch) meal 3 with high carb, mod-high pro, less fat. (after school) pro+carb. (post workout shake) high pro, mod carb, mod fat. (dinner) pre bed protein, less carb, higher fat. i never go further than -+500 cals (usually +-200).

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 58 | Since weight is your key concern, you eat healthy, weigh in every day. If you gain weight on one day, just cut back the next day or two until you lose that lb. It is important that you empty your bowel, don't eat varying amounts of salt (avoid water weight swings) and empty your bladder prior to the weigh in to get a most accurate weight. I can keep my weight within a 3 lb range very easily doing this without counting calories. Having said that, I am on a cut, so I do need to count calories or I wont reach my weight loss and macro targets. *

| Pro Stature | to make my last post clearer: what im trying to say is that if you follow the same schedule you dont have to worry about counting anything - as long as you get similiar amounts of each macronutrient for your meals day by day, youll never go far off..
