Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 114 | Someone told me there were kcals in splenda. I said i knew, and there were about 2 per packet, so the company can advertise it as 0. She then told me it was 11 per packet. I asked her where she heard it and she said the BBC and a few articles. I didn't believer her at first, then I thought about the ingredients... it's not just sucralose.... it has dextrose and maltodextrine... which have 4 kcals/gram.. can someone clear this up for me?

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 51 | From the Splenda Web Site: http://www.splenda.com/page.jhtml?id...betes/main.inc 1 cup Splenda Granulated has 24g Carbs, and 96 Calories (kcal ) 1 cup Splenda = 226.8 g Splenda 1g Splenda Granulated = .105 g Carbs ( 24g Carbs / 226.8g Splenda ) 1g Splenda = .42 calories ( .105 g * 4 cal/g ) Serving size Splenda Granulated = 1 Tsp 1 Tsp Splenda Granulated = 4.2 g = 1.76 cal ( kcal ) Edit: ( update to the calculations ) This calculation is correct for the Granulated Splenda, but not for the packets. The packets are more concentrated and may be as high as 4 cals per packet, although they may actually be less. I'm researching the packets further. - EME

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 51 | Splenda is a sugar substitute...... but it isn't the same as every other sugar substitute... like Equal, Sweet n' Low, Nutrasweet, etc... Splenda is it's own compound, and the nutritional data above only applies to Splenda. You'd have to look up the individual nutritional stats for any other product. - EME Quote:

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 51 | Nutritionally, it's probably fine. People will debate the health effects of certain sugar substitutes, but I haven't found any evidence that proves to me that any of them are harmful in doses that any human would actually consume. Some products are definitely better than others. Some sugar substitutes taste decent in something like coffee, but taste absolutely horrible on food. Splenda actually tastes very good on food, which is a major reason that I like it. - EME Quote:

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 71 | I use splenda (less than 1 teaspoon) when I have protein shakes in a shaker cup. According to the box, it has 2 cals per teaspoon.

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 51 | I'm not sure if there was a typo on the web site I was looking at, or what.. But my box of Splenda actually says the serving size of 1 packet actually = 1g, not .1 g. Not sure if that's a labeling thing, or the actual mass. Based on a serving size of 1g, 1 packet would have .1g carbs and .42 cal ( kcal ) Still, very very low. - EME

Recipes: 0 Rep Power: 51 | Yes, After some more research, I have found that they vary the mixture of the granualted box sugar slightly from the packets, so that you can use it 1 for 1 just like you do sugar. The calculations above are correct for the granulated splenda, but don't translate over equally to the packets. The packets are more concentrated and provide more "sweetness" per serving. I haven't found an exact calculation of the calories, but the web site does say that 24 packets provide the same "sweetness" as 1 cup of granulated splenda. If that translates to mean that 24 packets provide the same amount of "calories" as 1 cup of granulated splenda, then one packet would equal 4 calories... but I'm not sure that assumption is correct. However, that is probably where that information stating that elsewhere on the net has come from. The sucralose provides most of the sweetness associated with the splenda, yet it does not provide usable calories to the body. The Splenda web site says there are only trace amounts of Dextrose and Maltodextrin in the product, and that sucralose is the main ingredient. If the packets simply have twice the sucralose, then the calories would not be twice as |
