Default beans....the new oatmeal?

oatmeal is a staple for most bodybuilders since it is 1)cheap 2)low GI and 3)cheap. however, i think that 15 bean soup may have it beat. not only is the GI slightly lower, but a $2 bag will give you ~320 grams of carbs, whereas a $4 tub of oatmeal will give you ~350. plus, you can toss in some beef or chicken and you have a simple meal for when you're on-the-go.

Brother, all I'm gonna say is that I was eating beans and fat free cheese when I was a newb, and like 10 people acted like I was an idiot. I'm still convinced that beans are a superior source of carbs... possibley even against oats. They taste like the bomb too.

I love beans! I agree that they're are often overlooked by the majority of the population... plenty of fiber and protein too.

BUT, I have to bring up a point about the cost.... in the bulk section, I get organic oats for $0.75 / pound, meaning for 75 cents, I get 300+ g of carbs. Not a bad deal

Depends. Most people when they eat beans have beans in tomato sauce and sugar and bacon and it's only like 5% bean by the time they're done adding all the bad ingredients.

Canned kidney beans in water are probably healthier than oats, but wow they taste like suck.

maybe too you. Dude, cook em down with just a tablespoon or two of salsa, maybe some oregano.... then mash em up. MmMMmMMmmm fat free "refried" beans.

My only complaint about canned beans is the sodium. Oatmeal definitely wins in that category.

yeh, i forgot about buying oats in bulk. from bobsredmill, with shipping included, it'd be around $35 for 25 lbs of rolled oats. steel cut oats are an even better deal, but i just can't seem to eat pebbles

i eat 1 cup of beans EVERY night of the week during my cuts. Beans, low carb wrap, 8oz chicken and low carb ketchup. That is my before bed post cardio meal. I think most people eat beans. They just don't say it. It is a great source of slow carbs (please, never use the word GI ever. It is a inferior term for an inferior and critical mindset.), fiber and they taste creamy. I do refried, black and red beans all the time.

Sixpack got me started on them about 6 months ago.

Don't forget your multi

PS: If we are going to get into a GI discussion, start a new thread.

You're getting ripped off???

I pay 1.99 REGULAR price for 2lbs 10oz of rolled oats... 1.69-1.79 when it's on sale.

does that include shipping? cause brm sells 25 lbs for 14, but shipping is typically 20+

plus with bob's red mill they'll include gift cards and they'll write anything you ask them to. for example "sorry for giving you herpes. here's some steel cut oats to make up for it!"

beans beans beans beans.... I gotta go buy some beans! They go good with anything... say some steak, rice, and plantains. mmmmmmmm!

I gotta say, even though many people don't include them in their diet, BAKED beans are delicious!!

That's why I don't buy bulk online... I don't want to pay for shipping a huge package. 35$ for 25lbs comes out to about $1.40 per/lb, almost double what I'm paying for oats. I just spend ~$4 and get 5-6lbs of oats at a time from the bulk section of the grocery store. But the grocery store doesn't write me STD apology letters

ok, sorry, enough about oats, this is a beans thread

Thumbs up

Beans are a great source of fiber and incomplete protein, add some salsa on top and you are set

Beans are great. Add them to brown rice and you have a cheap complete protein as well.

Skelooth, canned beans and sodium eh?
Get the slower sodium kind, and on top of that rinse them really good in water and most of the sodium will be gone.

Love to make 3 bean Chilli, too.
Just use 1 can Black Beans (rinsed) 1 can Kidney Beans (rinsed), 1 can Northern Beans or Pinto Beans (rinsed) I usually get the goya brand since the have hardly any sugar compared to the other brands I find. 1 Big can Crushed Tomatoes and some Chili Seasoning, some water to top it off and some onions and cook it down. Yummy!

I add one can of black beans to freshly prepared pasta sauce (ground beef, canned diced tomatoes, onions and peppers) to stretch it - not only does it add fiber and protien, but my husband will actually feel full without eating half a pound of meat or more in one sitting (I don't object to him eating that much, just that he needs 8-14 oz every time he eats in order to "feel full" which I've told him is pretty much a waste metabolically - at least, that's my current understanding). Throw that on some pasta plus (Barilla brand) and you're getting a LOT of fiber and protein in one sitting.
