Default I'm a wuss.

I figured I'd go ahead and admit that.

I checked this board out because I've had a lot of difficulty discerning between sound fitness/nutrition information, and what was crap. Hence, I found a forum full of members that do their fitness/nutrition homework, whos brains I might be able to pick.

I'm not bad as far as weight/fitness goes, but I'm not where I used to be, and I do realize I'm not 17 anymore (24, to be exact) and I can't make the same demands of my body as I used to. But I don't want to become complacent and gradually fall downhill into overweightness and health conditions.

I have had three surgeries on my right wrist, I have tendonitis in my right knee, and fractured my tailbone twice last year (stupid rollerblades).

I also have developed severe throat pain anytime I do aerobic workouts ever since having my tonsils/addenoids removed in 2002. It's not a lung problem, I used to be a pro opera singer, so I have very strong lungs. I don't know what causes it, but I just have the weirdest throat pain when I do anything aerobic. I heard I needed to breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth, but it hasn't helped.

My Bad Habits:

- I only consume about 1500 - 1800 calories a day. Unfortunately, I only eat once, possibly twice a day.

- I don't like sleep

- I have a sedentary job.

- I'm broke

- My lifestyle forces me to rely heavily on prepackaged foods/whatever someone is cooking/whatever is free

- I'm allergic to nature, I love it, but it makes me physically miserable

- I'm not serious about it. Well, I'm partially serious. It just seems like everyone I know, if they begin a diet or workout routine, it becomes their life. I dated a bodybuilder briefly. I got completely sick of hearing him ramble on about his body constantly. I'm too busy being a full time student and a full time employee and working on improving my mind to focus all my attention on my body. I'm also afraid of becoming vain. My looks matter to me, but I don't want to become obsessed with my body. I also have a mild history of anorexia/bulimia, and I'm afraid of lapsing back into those habits. I'm a bit of a control freak, and know I have tendancies towards trying to overcontrol my body.

- Also, I hate running. With a passion.

So, I'm glad to be here, I've already met a couple of cool people, and I am hoping to use this site as resource for sound advice and debate. I also am very impressed with the strict rules about flaming/trolling/spamming. It is very comforting to know that bs and insults are not tolerated.

So, that's my blurb. If you want to know more, feel free to ask, or check out my other profiles:

props to you for admitting to yourself youre not performing 100%, most people I meet never admit it to themselves then blame their bad results on genetics etc.
about the money thing and meals consider looking for the most dirt cheap stuff that just "work", function matters more than taste.. a cup of cottage cheese with some berries and a couple of peanuts is a good snack to carry in school/work (cottage cheese ive found 1$/lb, peanuts 1,5$/lb, berries 2$ for a small bag so its going to come out to a bit less than a dollar per meal for this, if you can afford prepackaged you can afford this ).. whole wheat sandwitches with half a chicken breast with some lettuce and a bit dressing.. you can get this stuff really cheap.. if youre eating once a day and if that meal is 1800 cals i think your main concern should be splitting that up, its probably the biggest setback but I understand how hard it can be with both school AND work (fortunately for me I only had to work on saturdays and sundays from 11 to 10), stress just produces more cortisol, estrogen etc and sets you back.. small steps to success
good luck getting back in track and welcome to the forums!

Thanks, I do tend to eat reasonably well, I love lowfat cottage cheese with herbs, and tend to eat a lot of fruit. My staple food is a tortilla (whole wheat if I can find it) lettuce, sliced turkey, and low cal italian dressing, wrapped up with extra veggies if they're available. I am a complete type A high-strung uptight stressball, which is the main reason I've become concerned about my health. I sell health insurance for a living, and my biggest fear is giving myself a heart attack.

I appreciate the advice. The 1800 figure is mostly an estimate, I do count calories, and I'll skate through some days on 600 or less, or else I'll go out to dinner and pile them in, and, when the opportunity presents itself, I love my Jack & Cokes (yes, with full calorie Coca Cola too), but I'm normally a coffee/water/light beer drinker.

Today:

1 cup Special K, 2% milk, sliced almonds (I actually ate breakfast for once)
6" chicken breast on wheat, cucumber, pickle, banana pepper, spinach, black olive, with light mayo
1/2 pot Coffee (black)
Bud Select

1 extended release Diurex
1 Allegra-D

Wow nice long detailed intro Jayelin. Sure helps give everyone a quick insight into where your at and where you want to be. Sounds like bad luck follows you around when it comes to injuries! When I get some time I'll throw a couple of suggestions your way, in the mean time I hope some of the other great members here help you out. Welcome to IronMass.

There is a difference between lifting as part of a healthy lifestyle and the bodybuilding lifestyle complete with endless cycles of bulking/cutting etc. It sounds like you have a lot to work with and around, and I understand not wanting to become physique centric just to get healthier.

Do you have any specific goals aside from general health?

Aww, thanks Powerman.

I've done mild (like, free weights, strap on wrist and ankle weights, a 15lb. weight bar that came with a dvd, etc...) weight training before and found it to be very rewarding. I still have killer forearms from 4 years of being a shift manager (read - coffee jockey) at Starbucks, all the lifting and bending and repetitive motions + working out at home + being on the Adkins diet really did wonders for my figure. I didn't lose a lot of weight, but I lost inches and actually developed some arm muscle, and I thought it was awesome. That was before wrist surgery #1.

As far as goals, of course I want to lose fat and look better, that's pretty obvious. What mostly concerns me are the mental health benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The last 6.5 months have been the most difficult and stressful and non-enjoyable of my life, and I know I have anxiety problems and am prone towards depression, and I know exercise releases endorphines and seratonin into the system. Of course, if I do achieve better nutrition and noticable results, that might just be a confidence booster, which also leads to overall well being.

You know that's why it's called a medicine ball? I forgot the technical term for the 'disorder', but they used to believe that stress produced a disorder, and the treatment was basically exercise and relaxation. Hence, medicine ball was developed. Yup. It was a treatment for mental illness.

The funny thing - first time I fractured my tailbone last year: I just bought some rollerblades, with the idea that it'd be a fun way to get some exercise. Third day I had them, WHAM, did about a 330degree flip while going downhill way too fast, landed on my tailbone. Beat up the rest of my body pretty well too. The right wrist? Karate class. Tore the tendon in my right knee doing a mile run when I was 11. So ya, I'm prone to injury. Not broken bones or anything glorious, just annoying bs.

Lol, you found me... you caught the Tater.

I figured you'd probably think it was creepy or stalkeriffic that I was here, when I was just genuinely seeking fitness advice. And I did put down in my registration that you were my referral.

So ya, 'Trick D' is a really cool guy and chatting with him has encouraged me to set my sights on developing a maintainable healthy lifestyle. He's one of our WVa agents. I've know his partner for 8 years, and first talked to Trick 3 years ago.

Out of nowhere my cousin/co-worker offered to take me with her to Weight Watchers tonight. She's going to try to con Dad into paying for it for me, because I'm a poor college student and he doesn't pay me that much.

So, I don't know if it was coincidence or what, but it looks like my journey to fitness is getting a jumpstart.

Thanks D :mods:

Didn't join, want to see what I can do on my own before I go investing in any new ventures. Of course, if I can get financial assistance on the venture, hell ya.

Today:

11:26am 1/2 coffee mug of special K, 2%, sliced almonds
1pm Arbys turkey and swiss
6:45pm 1/2 grilled chicken breast, 2oz mashed potatoes (no butter), a crapload of green beans with slivered almonds

About 1/2 pot of coffee (black)
About 4oz vodka, with a splash of lemonade

Excedrine Tension Headache (acetaminophen, salycilic acid, caffiene)x2
Benedryl x2

Multivitamin
Ginko Biloba
Cinnamon
Fiber
L. Acidophilus

One thing that I have found works well for me (I have an addictive personality :-D) is to start a routine and keep at it, rain or shine. Fix your diet, which is always the biggest part. Oh, and never stop asking questions!

Good luck in your journey, we'll she ya around
