I was actually pretty surprised by that.

At 165 lbs I benched 225 for 21 reps, and maxed out at 365.

I think anyone under 200 who legitimately benches at least 315 and Squats and Deadlifts Over 405 is very strong compared to anyone but competitive powerlifters.

Honestly.. Anytime I see anyone under 200 pounds do any lifts with good form with over 315 lbs, I consider them strong. You don't see that a lot unless you are in a really hardcore gym, or a sports team training facility.

Well... dumbells are a tricky exercise and because they don't directly convert to barbell bench press it is kinda hard for me to estimate the numbers.

120- 60's
160- 90's
200- 110's
250- 150's

200 at 110lb DB's huh? One of these days I'm gonna have to attempt some 1RM. I'm at 206 and I use the 80's when I do my chest routine. I'm certain I can go to the 85's, but I'm not ready just yet since I want to be able to get the 80's for at least 2 sets of 12 reps. Soooo, I keep lifting!

I also noticed the chart doesn't take into consideration any age. Seems to me age would or should come into play. I figure as you age at some point you start to get weaker, even if you have lifted for years.

What's everyone else's thoughts?

Thanks SoMD!

I haven't trained that heavy in recent years.

I went up to about 275 on Incline Bench last fall for 4-5 reps, but that was it.
With my pec tear, I doubt I'll ever go that heavy again.

Heavy training is a very effective method for building mass, and it's what I used during my first years for sure.. but it gets harder to train that way when you have injuries to deal with, and as you get older ( although there definitely are some really strong older guys ).

Anyway... got a little off topic there.

Thanks man!

Nice numbers for 157. :bigthumbu

Why do you only do partial reps on your bench though?

I agree that partial reps can be an occasional strategy to help you bust through a plateau, but I believe that full controlled reps are very important.

oh im right there with you! i alternate each week between barbell and dumbells, i do the full motion with dumbells. but with barbell i'll do a set of 185 and 205 with full reps. lately its been something like..
135 - warmup
205 - 10 full
225 - 8 partial
225 - 8 partial
185 - 10 full
i never lockout, no matter if its a full or partial rep. then usually towards the end of the month i'll try to load the bar and do what i can for 4 partial/full reps.

I've been thinking of alternating between DB and BB for my chest routine as well. I already alternate between flat and incline with DB's each week.

Well I'm not going to get weaker :P

I I'm ~200lbs short of coming in as a 4th class powerlifter for my weight. I'll probably make it after my next cut though. I'm a bit bloated :o
