Cool [Week 16's Topic] - Gotta Learn 2 Live With...

Aiight... I'm styll running thys topic of the week... Nothyng's changed... I want to thank everyone for their responses last week...

Earlier thys week, I was talking with a few gym buddies about our humble beginnings and introductions to the sport... We laughed about all the magazines we bought as kids... All the supplements we wasted money on... How none of us took nutrition seriously... etc.. etc... So, I figured... Why not discuss our 3 biggest regrets involving thys wonderful sport of bodybuilding... If the experienced members can share the 3 thyngs they regret... it may prevent those new to the sport from going down the same road...

I guess I'll start..

1. Nutrition - I regret not taking the nutritional aspect of thys sport seriously... If I'd learned about protein/carbs/fat ... when I'd started, there's no telling how many of my goals I would've surpassed already.

2. Consistency - I started when I was 16.. Since then, lyfe has thrown me many curve balls... I've always done pullups or gotten a dumbbell and did curls & extensions... but I wysh I'd have stuck with it... If I had to do it over again, I would've tried harder to make working out a priority in life.. Fortunately, it's never too late to start.

3. Squats - I'm ashamed to admit thys.. but I started doing freeweight squats for the fyrst tyme ever in February or March of 2005... ... I just started doing deadlyfts as well... a few months later, maybe June... but I wysh the very fyrst gym I joined had a squat rack, with people that squatted and would've shown me the light... Once again tho, more proof that it's never too late to start...

As they say, ya gotta learn to live with regrets... What are some of the thyngs you wish you did or could do differently??

Peace..~G

Thumbs up

Great topic GDD,

1. Legs.
Like a lot of noobs i did little to no leg training when i got into bodybuilding because i hated it. It wasnt until a few years ago, about 2, that i started training my wheels as hard as the rest of my body. I still hate leg day but theres nothing i respect a fellow bodybuilder more for than having some killer quads.

2. Diet
I regret not taking the time to learn the nutritional aspect of the sport sooner. Although i was supplementing and training correctly i didnt realize how important nutrition actually is, and to be on your way to quality muscle all three aspects must be in-sync.

3. Goal Setting
When i started out and for the first couple years i wasnt setting goals for myself... sure i wanted to be huge but i was really just shooting in the dark. It wasnt until recently that i realized that in order to achieve long terms goals in this sport you must first set many short term goals.

Thx.. I have to agree, I'm glad I'm not the only person that ... I guess "looks down on" ... the guys in my gym that don't squat or do leg presses or even have decent calves...

Today was my leg day & my friend admitted to me that he's been working out since November... and has never done a leg exercyse... I just shook my head because I'm sure he's not the only one... and I remynded him that it's BODYbuilding ... not chest & arms building...

---------

Hey Bob, I'm also styll nailing the diet... Fitday.com has replaced my favorite porn site... I'm sure we'll always be learning tho...

Peace..~G

Nutrition is the legal anabolic, once you have a solid diet ready to start you will see major results. I see to many people who load the drugs or supplements and have terrible diets and always think it's the training or supplements. Many people always think that high protein will not do much for you then give you kidney failure...well if you took double the protein to your body weight for 4 months and report back you will see a lot more mass. And also people neglect fats as not doing anything for you and always use low amounts of fats in there diets. Well fats can help gains more then that $50 supplements you just wasted your money on...And for fat loss people always say that carbs should be very minimal. You can go straight to nothing by completely neglecting carbs. But you can still eat the carbs and cut them off at a certain time at night to provent all the fat build up. Plus when it comes to diet, people always forget that there metabolism burns up around 1,800-3,000 calories just alone without working out or cardio.

If someone stays with there diet, training, and supplement regime they can organize and easily tell when they hit a plaetu and need to change up the diet or routine. If you keep a schedule each day and know what to do it gets easy. Try doing the same thing for a while, hit a plaetu and then find out what's wrong whether you need some extra protein, fats, or carbs. And you can also tell when you should switch up your workouts as well. Consistancy is one of the things people never really think about. if someone keeps a schedule they know and do everything planned out. But you see some unorganized person missing workouts or meals and not even knowing what he's doing in that day.

There are plenty of great exercises out there you can easily gain on. Squats are one of the best leg developing exercises. Some people grow well from squats, some not. If your schedule includes heavy compound exercises like squats then you will see plenty of improvement. Isolation isn't the best thing out there, heavy compound exercises 75% and isolation 25% of the time and you should be set. The body is made to do simple movements we know by heart. Squatiing, benching, and dead lifts are the movements we probably use the most and that's a reason they are the best. We use those exercises the most and use them in real life without even realizing it.

I knew what to do when I first began. I realized how important diet, heavy training, and the basics were in building the perfect body for myself. I kept consistant and built a great ohsique at the age of 19. Age doesn't mean much to me, it's how much effort and time comitted to your goals you can easily acheive what you want.

Spent some time on this, hope you guys learned something.

Good post.. but you young whippersnappers are sooo lucky to have sources of information lyke IronMASS.com & the internet... You're also 19... hahaha.. I guess you haven't been around long enough to get those curve balls.. but I wish you the best of luck at hitting them out the park...

I'm waiting to see that perfect body of yours... after college... after the full tyme jobs.. after the family... I hope it all continues to work out for ya... I worked as an Over the Road truck dryver... pushing the 18 wheeler 24/7, border to border & coast to coast... I loved it.. but there's not too many 24 hour fitness centers at the truckstops... Gotta do whatcha gotta do ryght?? ... Stay on the ryght path & remember to scream "IronMASS.com", when ya win the "O" ...

Anybody else??

Peace..~G

Thank you GDD, I think things will slow down when school or a family comes around. Right now all I have to do is go to work in a day and spend time with my girl friend. For right now, Bodybuilding is my main focus. Then college, it will slide a little from there.

Bump for more posts.

i am no where near experienced as a lot of you, but i have a few regrets as well....

for ONE...i wish i had been more educated on life in general and had not been weak enough to have been steered in the wrong directions a few times....between eating CRAP and partying too much, i wasted a lot of time i could have spent in the gym getting in great shape....

DIET is also something i took for granted...i used to believe as long as you got in some form of exercise you could basically eat whatever the hell you wanted.....WRONG....it takes determination and control to get the diet aspect of weight training down...its only been the last few months that i have seriously changed the way i eat, and i already can see and feel the difference. eating clean is extremely important...

another thing that set me back for a while was MONEY....a lot of people think you have to be a member of a gym to seriously pick up weight training....this isnt the case....for too long i didnt even TRY because i couldnt afford to go to the gym and i didnt think i could progress... thats just a crock IMO...all it took for me to get started was going to Walmart and buying a barbell set ( for $30)! as silly as it sounds, i used an old ottoman as my bench for the first few months until i was able to afford a weight bench ( and even then i didnt realize how cheap you could get one!)....not long after that i bought an adjustable dumbbell set ( $22) and i was set! i know having access to machines will eventually be something i will need, as well as something that will benefit my training, but it wont stop me from lifting if i cant get to a gym! anytime i find i do not have the equipment i need i realize i can make it work with other things...(i.e i use 5 gallon paint buckets for my rack pull rack.....my weight bench as my squat rack...a huge wooden block for my calf raises...and i am currently working on a cable pulley for my pulldowns)....dont let not having money stop you from doing whats right for your body!

LASTLY...as a woman...i used to think lifting heavy would make me HUGE like a man...what i didnt realize was that women's bodies are just not capable of getting really HAYOGE without "help"...all heavy lifting will do is make us sexier and healthier! i think too many women are afraid to lift because they truly believe they will become BIG....its a MYTH! i have never been happier now that i lift heavy ( and that means heavy for ME...everyone is different in what weights they can lift)...never again will i think that if i lift only light weights i will look better than if i bust my ass lifting heavy!

OH...and the word TONING is NOT a word! there is no such thing as toning...you either lift and build lean muscle mass, or you dont....its straight to the point and anyone who tells you all you need to do is a little toning to get in shape doesnt really understand what lifting is all about.

I am nowhere near as experienced as any of you, but my regret is getting into working out this late in my teen years. All of my friends used to talk about how they just benched 50 lbs. back in 6th grade and such, and I used to be very against the idea of working out. Now, at age 15, I can't get enough of it.

I realize this is a minor regret, but I wanted to attempt to add to the conversation lol
