Default Midnight Lifter’s 2007 IMPC “Path to Fitness and Physique” Log

Midnight Lifter’s 2007 IMPC “Path to Fitness and Physique” Log

This is the start of my IMPC contestant log. I have entered the Most Improved Physique competition and the Novice Bodybuilding competition. Although I currently have NO plans or desire to shave and dye myself orange – and yes, since I am a cheap-ass mofo, I expect to have the gaudiest shade of canned tan going – I may actually be convinced to NOT drop out at the last minute if my results are stellar. (Michael – if you get any tarnished trophies, maybe I could win one of the orange ones? LOL…)

I will be using this log during my competition prep to keep myself focused and on track, as well as to solicit input from the great minds here at IronMass.com. As a relative newbie, and a newcomer to the IMPC, I’d greatly appreciate critique of my initial plans (coming soon) as well as suggestions as things change along my journey.

I will also be logging my feedback on the various supplements I am taking along the way. I was recently picked to be one of the ALR Industries WTF Pump’d testers, so that will show up next week or so.

This log will evolve over time and be shaped by you, my adoring fans. For the most part, no questions or discussions will be off limits, though we may have to take them to the Underground section of things get out of hand.

I’ll get my diet and workout plans up shortly. Tho it’s already been two weeks, I haven’t “idiot proofed” them yet. My plan is to have nothing left to interpretation or error, but to also build in ‘options’ as my schedule can become quite hectic at times. (For example, we’re at a trade show a few days next week… they won’t let me bring my fridge/microwave, so I’ll have a crate of meals brought in and bring the Tupperware home at night!) Planning and proper options should take care of that…

Thanks for all your support so far. I’ll be looking for you to keep me on track… and to warn me to duck when FitnFirm comes by with her whip!

IMPC 2007 Nutrition and Supplement Notes

I have taken the original meal plan Michael Elias devised for my recomp and converted it into a punch-out checklist so I am sure to NEVER MISS A MEAL or be at a loss for what to eat next. (I am working on substitutes for when I don’t have the luxury of properly-planned meals or when I need to take things that are a little more portable than a stack of Tupperware…)

My general macros are (weekly average): 45/31/24 (protein/carb/fat) with calories staying between ~2500-3600 throughout the week.
Foods are the standard oatmeal, chicken breast, steak, sweet potatoes, cottage cheese, bananas, apples, whey, etc. and supplements are essentially nil. The only thing Michael spec’d for me on the plan is Xtend (and whey).

But, we all know what a supplement junkie I am… so I will be taking a few additional things along the way.
In addition to whey protein, I also take a multivitamin (either Animal Pak or a generic, premium multi) and fish oil caps. I forage on several “green foods” supplements (wheat grass based stuff) from time to time, and will also substitute a MetRx MRP, as well as an occasional rice protein shake with skim milk just to mix/screw things up a bit for that day…
In the past, I have taken garlic oil, Sesamin, and other veggie caps or green foods supplements. I may add those in, especially as I progress through the summer.

Currently I am taking Applied Nutraceiticals’ IGF-2 and NeoVar. I’m on IGF-2 through may 16th, and will continue with the NeoVar for a while after that. I had planned on adding in their Lipotrophin PM, but I was recently chosen to run a tester log for ALR Industries’ WTF Pump’d, so I don’t want to add anything new while I run that log.

I plan to run this pretty steady for at least the next 8 weeks, if not for a full 12 weeks before monkeying around too much. Skel suggested I look into the a keto or CKD plan for my heavy-duty cut, so I will be looking into that to pull in the (extended) home stretch (and pull in the win at the end of this whole thing).

As for supps, I’ve got a bunch of samples that I’ll try out, and will be adding in my Animal Nitro. I’ve got some misc leftover things lying around that I’ll mop up, but unless I bum some hardcore stuff off Skel or Ikea, or land another sponsored anabolic stack of something like ALRI’s evo stack or AX’s HyperMass (or something comparable that will keep lean gains coming while potentially burning additional fat!), I’ll probably keep it pretty simple. (Or gobble down the Zappetite I’ve got sitting around here…)

IMPC 2007 Training Notes

As for my training program, my recomp plan is your standard set of exercises with a few twists. First off, I am limited to free weights and an incline/decline/flat bench. I built a calf block and bought a heavy iron bar (that I jammed into the interior framing under my basement stairs) for pull-ups, and I have some milk crates for step-ups.

*** Anyone who needs me to run a log on a lifting cage, please let me know.*** I really need a safer way to increase my bench, and some way to do squats with a bar. Note: Any manufacturers looking for consumer logs on new technology in this area, such as SmithMachine-Ethyl-Ester or a SuperAnabolic Lift/Resistance Cable, I’m not afraid of these new technologies…

I used to do a routine with pyramids and heavy on the basic compund lifts, and will probably start to swap in some of those days with the above routine to mix things up a bit.

The key is the cardio component – Six days a week! For the most part, this will be rowing on one of these babies: WaterRower Rowing Machine. Rowing Machines of exceptional design, quality and style I will be tossing in some sprints and ‘pleasure’ bicycling (in other words – nothing even close to what StoneCold’s been doing...

I will most likely be switching from being a ‘Midnight Lifter” to an early morning lifter… we will see. It may be that I do cardio mornings and lift evenings…. You guys will have to come up with a new screen name for me LOL…

Current measurements are:
Height: 6’0” Weight: 205 BF%: ~20%
Bicep (r, flexed: 16 ¼” unflexed: 14 5/8”) Chest: 42 ½” Waist: 37 3/8” Hips: 39 5/8” <--- (Double !) Thigh: 26 7/8” Calf: 17”

My goals are:
Weight: 175 or less BF%: 10% or less
I know everyone loses LBM when on a cut to some extent, so I’ll be curious to see what size I maintain. (Obviously, some of the inches above are FAT and will go away…) However, I want to keep as much lean mass as possible (maybe add some?!?!?) while improving overal balance in my physique. I am excited to see my progress along the way.

As things progress, I may switch to a 5x5 program or DoggCrapp routine, but I want to plan it out to meet my changing needs. I think I need to keep my focus on the fat loss/recomp goal and not worry too much about getting’ hyooge (yet). Liftin’ is gonna be a conditioner and calorie burner first and foremost, while being a means to maintain LBM and balance my physique.

I would also like to add in some flexibility exercises and will be putting together an alternating PNF (on on days) and non-ballistic stretching (on off days) routine. Not sure if I’ll be able to actually incorporate it… but that’s my goal.

Am I over thinking everything adequately enough for everyone? LOL…

Oh… and I plan to keep entries MUCH shorter in the future, or at least more entertaining if they are this long.

Boring update tonight...

I am changing from a Midnight Lifter to a grumpy-assed morning lifter. The life schedule has been screwy lately, so the lifting schedule has been takin' the hits.
To remedy this, I'm switching to morning workouts for a while. If that doesn't seem to work after a while, I may do morning cardio to be sure I get it in, and still lift in the evenings (just a little earlier -- sleep is Vitamin S!).

Some of you know that I manage a small wood lot, which essentially means a lot of opportunity to saw, throw, split, toss, and stack logs and firewood. Not a totally balanced workout, but good exercise, and pretty much all the exercise I've been squeaking in the past few days. I only hit the weights twice this week... ugh.

Tomorrow AM is back and 20 min on the treadmill... wish me luck on dragging my ass out of bed (and starting a new habit).

LOL... My wife thinks we should find a way to do the dishes... or laundry... I kinda like your idea better. It's got metal blades in there -- killer protein shakes!

OK – time to update this log and start to get serious about this contest. I’ve been ‘taking it easy’ this past week, pretty much erasing any gains (or losses, at least in the fat dept) I had coming off the first week or so.

How did he do it, you all ask? Well… I snuck in a few cheat 'meals', missed workouts, and wasted a week in this year’s IMPC. PUT IT TO GOOD USE everyone, because I’m rampin’ it up and not looking back.

Since FitnFirm is pretty much gonna own my ass for the next month (see my WTF pump’d! log for details…), I figured it was my last chance to party down before November. So, in addition to my regular meals, I had (in no particular order, not all in one day) Raisin Bran, a couple of hot chocolates, sugar in my coffee one morning, a medium Meatza Feast Dominos pizza (yeah I know, I know…), fiery habanero Doritos (those things are frickin addictive...), and a killer ‘leftover casserole’ of peas, carrots, ww pasta, Easter ham, a couple of eggs, and parm cheese. Sounds like the IMPC cheat thread, but that was not all in one day. Oh, and a couple of squares of a Ghirardelli midnight chocolate bar… (I admit it – I’m a chocoholic.) plus all a great Easter dinner at my sister-in-law's and leftover ham in place of a couple of planned meals.

Workouts consisted mostly of splitting/tossing wood and yard work trying to get things ready for spring. DOMS weren’t too bad, so I guess I could have done more work around here… lol… It’s never ending.
I had to do shoulders tonight ‘cause I was feeling so friggin lazy all week (and since I had the last 3 slices of the pizza this afternoon…)

So… time to hit the hay so I can get up early and row in the AM. We'll see about the iron... may have to save that for the PM.

No measurements or update on weight… was afraid to step on the scale this AM, and ran out quick this am to the ‘Depot. I’ll get up some stats later in the week to start the WTF log.

Hope you’re all sticking to your plans better than I did. (not really… )

What more do you want? Screw it... I'm going downstairs to split wood for tomorrow and bang out tonight's chest routine.

Just ate ~ 1 lb of ground turkey... which is why I'm not doing legs as planned LOL.

OK, I probably should have used more smilies in that last post ... I wasn't pissed or whatever I sound like, just givin' the clown some crap.

Thanks for checking in is what I meant to say

So, the rest of the week will be as hectic as the past few days, but at least not so much with the business travel. (I can get some sleep now lol...)

Cardio schedule has sucked (no rowing, just a little on the wood splitting as a substitute). I jumped outside this morning to split up a little wood for the house today and pulled a muscle in my shoulder/back pretty bad. Looks like I'll be on the treadmill and doing legs tonight... lol...

I've done this before and sometimes it's OK in a day, sometimes it takes three days or more to go away. Not sure what I can do to help out that's not an old wive's tale... but it does hurt and it does piss me off when stuff like that happens.

Default Re: Midnight Lifter’s 2007 IMPC “Path to Fitness and Physique” Log

Party’s (almost) over peoples… I’ll try to hop on later tonight for an update, but (for me, at least) some of yous will have a jump on me of the past couple of weeks…

Quick check on stats reveals not too much damage, but also not too much progress, either Weight’s down a bit (from 211 to 206 – should be more by now...) and some measurements are nicer (BOTH biceps hit the 16” mark, chest is up a tad and waist is down a bit as well…)

I will make it point to log here more often for the excitement and for the focus. And, because (obviously) without the e-babysitting, I’m gonna go here (scroll down until you hit the burrito espicial with chicken). Un e-supervised, I might eat this (Nantucket Chocolate Chunk Cookies… hey, they were free with the turkey and sprouts sandwich at the trade show – go figure!).

Update to follow…

Default Re: Midnight Lifter’s 2007 IMPC “Path to Fitness and Physique” Log

OK – Phew! Great little workout – I had a lot on my mind to get done/coordinated for Mon/Tues so I figured I’d hit a few things quickly and not try to get through a full workout with crappy concentration. (The militant state comes in tomorrow and ensues FULL FORCE once I start logging the WTF for FitnFirm… I’m not allowed to screw up or it’s all over for the Midnight Lifter! :wash: :vacuum: <--- I ain't gettin' stuck doing pennance like that!)

Thanks to EzyRyder for making me pull out my old Skynyrd’s Innyrds tape (yes, cassette tape) last week. So I wrapped that up and started in on Neil Young’s Rust Never Sleeps while I did some Arnold presses, triceps, and biceps work – love those hammer curls!

Nothing too motivating, nothing too great… just didn’t want to let another night go by w/o lifting. Most workouts this past week have been of the “whole body” yard work variety – Throwing rocks for stone walls (not many, unfortunately) and wood mostly. The wood’s been great, but it’s time to get serious on this IMPC before May pics are due! (Though I did manage to move a couple dozen big 6-8’ lengths and split/tossed/moved two tractor loads of cordwood.)

Diet was solid today – no cheats and there were even leftovers from the Mexican joint calling to me for dinner… (I had 2 c broccoli, a chicken breast, and 1 tbsp flax oil instead… mmm)

As I move into the next phase of my log, I will be resetting the log to week one, even though we’re starting the fourth week now. I’ll pretty much be running the recomp plan for 8-12 weeks and begin tweaking things based on results and feedback up to that point. I’m sure I’ll have lots of questions come up that you’ll be helping me with along the way…

Quick update on stats and it’s off to bed for me… I’ll find a better way to illustrate changes as I get better at logging. For now:
Starting:
4/1/07 Weight: 211
Bicep (r, flexed: 15 ¾ ” unflexed: 14 3/8” - l, flexed: 15 5/8” unflexed: 14 ¼ ” ) Chest: 42 ½” Waist: 38 ½” Hips: 39 ½” Thigh: 26 ½” Calf: 17 ¼”

Today:
4/22/07 Weight: 206
Bicep (r, flexed: 16 ¼” unflexed: 14 5/8” - l, flexed: 16” unflexed: 14 5/8” ) Chest: 42 ¾” Waist: 37 ¾” Hips: 39 7/8” Thigh: 26 5/8” Calf: 17 1/8”

So… trying to balance my physique, I’d like to keep the biceps fairly close in measurement, and above 16” from here on out… it’s close and I’m gonna lose some padding… we’ll see. Looking for that chest measurement to shoot up as I revive my lats and really focus on developing my best IMPC 2007 physique.

Watch this space for more – there will be regular updates now to keep me on track. And more entertaining ones, too (hopefully!), especially once the spring weather really hits.

Default Re: Midnight Lifter’s 2007 IMPC “Path to Fitness and Physique” Log

Decided to walk/trot up and down the driveway a few time this am for some cardio to see how it felt as an option...
Driveway is ~800 ft at 14-17% incline, so I thought it might be a nice option to explore to switch things up if I need to.

Well, if I need to, I think I need to jog/run it to get a better workout, but it wasn't bad. (My old walking treadmill only goes up a couple of degrees for an incline... which is why we bought the rower.)

Other news -- DHL showed up with a little package for my WTF log... maybe starting tonight as I'll be missing tomorrow AM's workout due to business travel.

Diet's been good today (except for the coffee. Anyone recommend getting rid of it? I think I'll switch back to green tea or yerba mate again soon...)
