Default RC Surgery...................

Anyone from BB.com over 35 forum knows I had RC surgery March 28th. I'm currently undergoing Therapy. THe surgery was supposed to be authroscopic but the damage was much worse that anticipated......so..........they had to cut me. Any info that I can give to those needing this proceedure done is welcome to the info I've gathered. Hell, I didn't even know what an RC was untill last year! But mobility and strength are increasing daily. It's not a surgery to take lightly, atrophy is a real bitch! I had my ACL replaced in my left knee in 2001 and still never made up for the 1/2" I lost in my thigh. My bicepts were both 17" before the surgery, now the left is 17 and the right is 15"! I hope what they say about muscle memory is true cause I got alot of catching up to do as I've been out of the gym since March 28th.

Default Good post!

Yea, I belive they call it an "imbalance". I know that I will never bench again nor care to. I'll be doing all dumbell work for chest and ALL of my "therapy" excersises as warm ups and as part of my main training. Though I always did lots of delt, shoulder and back work Incline benching is what did me in. I really loved the way inclines would add that thick shelf-like appearance to the upper chest. Hopefully I can do them again but I'll be much more careful and LISTEN to my physical therapist. She said she would give me a really good work -out program to get my strength back while also paying more attension to the RC area. I really didn't even know what a "rotator cuff" was untill the damage was done. In-Human, any good advice you can pass on I'm all ears!

I don't do flat bench anymore either, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Flat bench never gave me a good chest, it built up my triceps and delts. I prefer incline and decline over flat, and anything with dumbells is much easier on my shoulders than barbell and give me better results anyway.

Behind-the-Neck Press is also a terrible exercise for your shoulder joints. A physical therapist also told me that upright rows are not good for your shoulders either.

Fresch....I was supposed to have a routine Authroscopic but they found a large tear which had to be cut out then the good part streched and sewn. They also did some cleaning up of the area. There was some sort of "hole" they had to repair. After 50 years of abuse I really can't complain. Like my ACL surgery, they gave me some really cool pic's. This is why my therapy will be several months.
Powerman 2000..............4 exercises I was told NEVER to do are flat bench, behind necks, uprite rows and shrugs rotating the shoulder.
Johnsbod....you're wise beyond your years!
Dan............Thumbs up are most of my therapy exercises, that tells me something!

Yikes! That sounds like you went through a lot Captain America. I'm glad I found you. LOL I've been posting your picure on bb.com

My right rotator cuff gives me issues. When I injured it, I couldn't lift upper body for a year. My right arm wouldn't even raise up to parallel. The doctor said it was just impingement and kept telling me to ice it, do rotator cuff exercises, etc.

It's been better for about a year until recently. It's acting up again and I keep wondering if it's going to go out of commission all together again.

Anyway, the things that bother it most are flat bench presses (I don't do them) and any kind of machine exercise -- like shoulder presses on Smith Machine, etc. I avoid those.

Happy Wednesday!

He was right, and I don't do those exercises anymore either. I credit all 3 of those for giving me a RC injury when I was younger, and then I learned not to do them. A lof of bodybuilders seem to be hooked on flat bench though.

Ahh..a large rotator cuff tear and repair! You are in your 50's??

Common in that age group, and full rehab time can be up to 12 months, so be patient.

Can't see a problem with flat bench, but I shall ponder on that as to why it may be an issue.

My patience is definately getting tested. There is alot of things my mind wants to do but my shoulder will not let me yet. Around mid-summer I should be back to lifting. The problem with us BB'ers is the therapy is longer due to more muscle mass compensating for the injured atrophied area. If I didn't lift my therapy would soon be over.
