Default Gains after age 55

Is it possible to improve muscularity, beyond improved muscle tone, after the age of 55? Is it simply a matter of maitenance after you reach that stage in life? I'm not looking for anything significant but would like to add some muscle mass if that is a reasonable expectation. Is it all down hill from here I'm 6' 1", weigh 205 lbs. and in reasonably good health.

I believe gains will start go down after 60-70 years old.

Sure it can be harder after the age of 50, but it isn't anywhere close to impossible. Check out A Freeradical and old navy... they are both in the best shape of their lives and they are both older than 55. Hell Old navy just won a world championship!

Indeed. I am 60 years old and have been lifing since April of 2004. During that time, I have put on 16 lbs of muscle and lost 40 lbs of fat. My chest, arms and leg measuremeants are about the same, but they are muscular instead of fat. My waist has gone from a 39" waist to 33". Most of this time I have been cutting, not bulking, so a lot of muscle growth was't expected. After I reach my goal of a solid six pack and a 32" waist, I will go for some serious strength and muscle gain. I don't know about the 70s, but the 50s and 60s aren't too late if you can workout hard, can eat properly and don't have hormonal issues. (My testosterone, thyroid and HGH are in normal ranges for my age. I don't have any health issues.)

Thumbs up Thanks for the encouragement

Thanks for the feedback A.FreeRadical. It's nice to hear that gains are still possible with hard work and proper diet.

Congratulations on your achievements and good luck with your future efforts.

Hi, check out my website www.BodyBuildingSenior.com I began training for my first competition at age 61 and entered my first contest in March, 2005. Since then, I have competed in 12 bodybuilding competitions, winning 20 weight, height and age class trophies and two Best Poser awards. At the ripe old age of 63, in Toronto last month, at the 2006 FAME WNSO Body Building and Fitness World Championships I became the Men's Master 60+ World's Champion. I also placed Fourth in the Advanced Open Men's Lightweight Class in the same contest. I guess it's possible to improve muscularity, beyond improved muscle tone, after the age of 55.

Default Great News

Hi Old Navy...thanks for the great news. You've made some awesome gains and have given me cause for optimism. Judging by your example it does not have to be downhill for aging trainers.

I'm just getting started (3 months) but already I feel like things are starting to improve. I workout 3 days on and one day off, with what would be considered a low volume workload, but as I said I'm just getting into this again after over 30 years of no weight training.

Best wishes for your continued success.

When I started a little over two years ago, I did an 8 week routine using only lever and cable machines. (This got me in shape to be able to workout hard. After that I did a MaxOT 12 week course. MaxOT This is where I made a lot of muscle gains. Nubee gains for sure, but gains nevertheless.

Good luck, boomer!

Some years ago I was with my dad and met this old guy about 70 he was ripped beyond belief for such an old man. In talking to my dad later he told me that man used to be fat until his brother died of a stroke. That happened when the guy was 54. So ya it is possible.

For a nother good reference go look up Dave Draper.... Arnold quit whereas Dave did not.

Good luck Dan

Thanks Dan, I have been reading the Dave Draper forum and there are lots of folks there who are in the 50 plus age group who continue to train and make gains and set new PRs. It's good to know that progress is still very realistic.
