Default Jay Cutler - A Cut Above (Machines?)

I've been watching "Jay Cutler - A Cut Above" & he seems to use machines a lot of the time when training.

I'm just guessing here but I take it that it's because he's big enough already (he mentions this at the start) and just wants to improve (symetry etc) on the muscles he already has?

I know that machines can have their purpose in a bodybuilding regime but it just seemed odd that somebody like Cutler used them so much.

Also, does anybody have any idea what type of training he did to actually get to his size or close to it? Not that I'm gonna even attempt to do it, but I just want to know if he stuck with free weights whilst bulking up and then as I said above, just used machines to improve on the muscles he already had.

A lot of the pros use many machines. People with genetics like Cutler or top IFBB pros would add lots of mass doing any exercises that stimulate their muscles. I wouldn't try to follow thier routines, and instead experiment, and try what works for you.

I never thought about their genetics being the reason, good point. I just assumed that seeing as he was a pro & new a hell of a lot about bodybuilding that he wouldn't rely on machines as much as he is in the video, but it's obviously working for him.

Thanks for answering my question.

I still like that, out of all the big guys, Coleman, Cutler, Levrone etc... Ronnie is the only one you see doing squats and deadlifts.

No problem. Another thing to consider most top guys have been lifting consistantly for a minimum of 12 years some as much as 20 after all that time heavy lifting I am sure their joints appreciate machines, and they are also probably trying to keep the muscle guessing so to speak.. adding variety to their workouts.

When the cameras are off. Most pros routines are nothing special..

Jay Cutler did a set of deadlifts in this DVD

Although he wasn't going to the ground which I thought was odd, it was a sort of half assed deadlift.

From my knowledge... many pros like Ruhl and Cutler add some machines in there because they aren't trying to get bigger muscles. They all believe that free weights are the key, but they feel that they have the muscle, it is the conditioning and making the muscle look good while in full condition. That is why pros use machines.

Branch warren, Johnnie Jackson, Ronnie, and many other still do the freeweights hardcore. Those three are probably the best powerbuilders in the business.

Machines seem to be believed as the devil but they have their place just as free weights do.

I guess he's not as concerned about his longevity.

That depends on the machine in question.

you've also gotta consider the fact that these videos are done during olympia contest preparation. that makes a big difference in the way they train as well.

Good point. When dieting down, he is certainly going to be using more machines to try and avoid injury.
