Default Another dead bodybuilder Paul (Quadzilla) Demayo

Paul DeMayo Dies at 37
Contributed by The Roving Reporter
We received very disturbing news tonight from a very reliable source in Boston, Mass that NPC National Champ Paul DeMayo died of an apparent drug overdose.

At this point the details are limited but it seems that this is a real and unfortunate news. Paul was nicknamed Quadzilla and was known for his extreme leg development. Paul was only 37 years old.

RIP Paul and all our best to the DeMayo family.

That's too bad, I always had big respect for Paul. He was always one of the thicker guys around just couldn't bring it all together.

37 is so young.

Man, I'll be 36 this summer! I feel like my life is just beginning.

Does anyone have any more details about this?
I'll take a look around and see what I can find too.

Thanks Doc, although that link appears to be down.

Heroin overdose is what I read elsewhere, which surprised me.

How does a person who obviously cared a lot about his body at one time.. go down that road?

I can see the thought process behind adrogen use.....at least a person feels they are building their physique, getting bigger and stronger, even if there are risks....

But Heroin? Heroin is just poison.. with no physical benefit.

That's a pretty tough fall.

I have to be perfectly honest with you with regards to opiates. The medication that they give me for pain is basically pharmaceutical grade herion and you are right it does not have any physical benefit what so ever. But just to play the devils advocate here: opiates are way less harmful to the human body than steroids/prohormones or even Tylenol for that matter if the dosage is known. Overdose is the only side effect of opiates and usually occurs because nobody tests the strength of their heroin before they use it and since different batches are cut to different levels, one can be 20% and another could be 90%. So someone used to 20% gets the 90% and OD's because they used the same amount.

That being said nobody should ever take opiates of any kind unless it is absolutely necessary. Once you're on them getting off of them is extremely difficult as we see by the unfortunate demise of Paul Demayo. This guy had incredible control over his body but none over his demons. I have had the unfortunate experience of running short on my meds by a few days one month a while back and I can tell you why people continue to take the stuff. It was the most God awful experience of my life and if anyone is ever even thinking of just trying opiates recreationally DON'T DO IT. Most people start out partying on the weekend, then they start feeling a little crappy on Monday so they take the edge off with a little to make them feel normal. Before you know it you're using it everyday just to keep from being "dope sick", not just for a fun buzz on Friday or Saturday night anymore. The withdrawl from opiates is unlike anything I have felt in my entire life. Your entire body just hurts like nothing you've ever felt, you puke, you shit, you can't sleep, you can't eat, you're hot, you're cold, your nose won't stop running, everything smells horrible, you yawn constantly, you're uncontrollably emotional, and you have the most mind bending depression you can imagine. And the worst part is that you know that all you have to do to feel better is get some more.
That's why even some of the strongest people in the world have this weakness.

And that's why I will NEVER take them in the first place, not voluntarily any way.

Thanks for the insite Doc. I appreciate your candor.

RIP Paul. How unfortunate that he had to start down that road to begin with.

This is just a theory, but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that he never did make it as a successful bodybuilder. He got his procard, competed for 1 year or so, got an endorsement with metrx, and called it a life. Recreational drug use is apparent with anyone in athletics. Coke in the 80's in baseball, Today weed, and apparently heroin in the heros of today.

I prefer to get high on life, with the occasional margarita or beer on the side.

No Illegal drugs for me, period!

When I was in college that meant 7 beers and 7 shots and you had to do it in 77 minutes . Very few people got past the beer in 1 hour, it was just another stupid college drinking game.

I remember those! *yuck* :o

As far as the opiates go, Doc you explained it very well. I was on 40mg Oxycontin/2x/day for a few months and like you said, it was the most awful expirience to get off of it. It's too bad that I still have alot of pain and may need to get back on the stuff because I sure don't want to have to go through that again. But if you can't live your life because of cronic pain, I guess you just have to deal with that possibility.....or stay on them forever.

wow, 7 beers and 7 shots in 77 minutes? what school did you go to!!!

We play power hour. 1 shot of beer every minute for 60 minutes. We play with a 1.5 ounce shot. 90 ounces of beer, so 7.5 beers. But 7 beers and 7 shots is rough.
