Default Papain

"Papain is a proteolytic (protein degrading) enzyme preparation isolated from the Carica papaya fruit. It is characterized by the ability to hydrolyze large proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. Its broad substrate specificity and ability to hydrolyze small peptides as well as large proteins make papain an ideal enzymatic supplement."

It was recommended by some here as a possible digestive tool for my lactose intollerance but I'm now seeing the possible benifits it can have for us bodybuilders with high protein diets. I wonder how much of a benifit it could be? Has anyone researched this further?

-Helps promote the healthy growth and fermentation of yeast
-Splits chains of protein, producing small peptides and free fatty acids, and helps in protein digestion.
-Hydrolyses starch molecules into smaller oligosaccharides, glucose and maltose.
-Ensures availability of adequate nutrient supply for growth and performance.
-Responsible for the absorption of ingested fats and mobilization of storage fats in animals.
-Helps in degrading cellulose and various plant fibrous material.
-Digests high molecular weight Arabinoxylans in animal feeds.
-Degrades phytin phosphorus and converts it into available form, thereby reducing the quantity of supplemented phosphorus. A cocktail enzyme preparation, tailor-made to suit the customer's requirements, is also available.

How does papain tenderize meat? Papain cuts the protein chains in the fibrils and also in the connective tissue, disrupting the structural integrity of the muscle fiber, and tenderizing the meat. Bromelain has many of the same benefits as papain and together they "pre-digest" meat proteins to make them more bioavailable to the body.

The recommended dosage is around 750 mg to be taken at least 45 minutes prior to or after meals. But if you're going to take papain you should probably get an enzyme supplement that aids in all areas of digestion (protein, carbs, and fat). Just look for one that has: Bromelain/Papain, Lipase, Protease, and Amylase to cover all the bases.

If you guys have a trader joes locally, go check them out. They sell all natural papain/bromelain chewable tabs (taste like a pineapple) that work like a charm. They're something like $2.50 for 100 caps. I take 2 per day and have loved the results in terms of feeling good w/o gas and such.
