Default bad effects of arachidonic acid

http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releas...-ofc012706.php

Quote:
An omega-6 fatty acid known as arachidonic acid turns on a gene signaling pathway that leads directly to tumor growth, according to principal investigator Millie Hughes-Fulford, PhD, director of the Laboratory of Cell Growth at SFVAMC and scientific advisor to the U.S. Under Secretary for Health for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Yeah I heard of this too..
I forgot the name but when I spoke to a doctor he called it something that starts with a T, and said that people who take it are more likely to develop cancer/diabetes/etc sooner then a regular person..
Whatever, I am no doctor, and dont mean to bash as I plan on using this supp =|

many of the studies done on arachidonic acid had mice injected with arachidonic acid, which is a completely different story than taking it orally. as long as you dont' have any pre-existing conditions and you only run a 50 day cycle, you shouldn't have any serious problems.

That paper involves incubating cancer cells, not normal cells, with arachidonic acid. Of course it will increase the growth rate of said tumors. AA promotes cell growth. Androgens and IGF-1 would do the same if incubated in its place.

All this study suggests is that it is not a good idea to take a growth promoting agent if you already have cancer.

BTW. The pathway discussed is PI3K; also strongly stimulated by IGF-1. If anything, in a round-about way this study supports the inherent anabolic action of AA.

Will, since you're here can you answer something for me? how do you feel about stacking IGF-1 with x-factor?

thanks that puts it in perspective. AA in general promotes cell growth.

It is not like IGF-1, which has an essentially global effect on the growth of cells, but under certain conditions AA (via conversion to PG's) acts as a tissue-specific anabolic (PGs do not stick around long enough to act as hormones; they only act locally). This normally means an anabolic effect in muscle tissue, but many types of cancer cells (which have an out of control growth response) also express cox-2, and are responsive to the growth promoting effects of PG's (or other hormones that the cells may have receptors for).
