Default teaching the squat

got a buddy thats gettin into lifting, hes progressing fairly well with bodyweight squats.

but hes clumsy as hell and cant keep his toes on the ground. by the end of a 15 squat set, his feet will almost be inline with each other. hes driving through the heels just fine, the rest of his form looks fine, like its not like his knees are too far back or anything like that.

i consulted the bible (aka starting strength) and cant find anything on keeping the toes down. thoughts?

For anyone interested, i think i figured it out. Just have the squatter curl and dig their toes into the ground. Still a work in progress, but its worked so far.

Kind-of in a different direction, but any advice on proper form for WOMEN vs MEN for the squat?

The main reason I ask is there is some debate starting at the high school as the strength training coach is having the girls do bar squats with what some of the parents are calling poor form. (Not sure how any of them know what good form is -- none of them look like they've ever worked out in their lives but are giving this kind of "advice" )

I have not seen this coach in action yet, so I haven't seen her form or her program. My daughter is an incoming freshman and will be working with her in the fall. My wife and I have been working with my daughter on conditioning, agility, and skills drills for the past few years and wanted to get her oriented to good form over the summer with weights, especially with this squat situation, so this thread caught my eye.

What little weight training we have done with her so far (earlier this year, pre-season that just wrapped up) was mostly body-weight functional strength exercises and all db work, including for squats.
Unfortunately, this strength coach prefers bar squats so we want our daughter to get a feel for good form...

Any and all thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

I dont really have any experience coaching women, or that much coaching in general. But I dont think theres really a difference between genders when it comes to form. It wasnt mentioned in the strength bible, and ive never really heard of form being different. The squat concept will still be the same (ie sitting back, arching your back, etc) either way.

And if youre still worried, you can of course always just have her do form work with a broomstick or a PVC pipe.

Hope this helps

Haha 365 for a newbie is pretty good though if you ask me.

Im not letting my lab rats squat even the bar until they can get at least 2 sets of 30 with a PVC pipe perfectly. Dont need to be getting people hurt when im training them in my basement...

big thing to watch out for with women, is that their quads are MUCH stronger then their hamstrings. For whatever reason, anatomically they are slightly different with this. Thing I would suggest : make sure she keeps her knees pushed out and over her toes.

have her keep her knees pushed out like Erika does here :

and not so much like beth @ the end of this video (she's the little one who cleans ~60kg near the end). Her form isn't bad, but she tends to nearly touch her knee's together on heavier lifts.
