Default Standard bar w/ olympic plates

Over the holidays my dad got me an olympic weight set so that I could work out at home as well as at the gym. The salesman gave him a standard ez bar for free. I have olympic plates. I've been using an extra star color to keep the weight from sliding. Is there a better way to use olympic plates with a standard bar?

Why can't you just buy an olympic bar?

So your dad only bought the plates? No bar?

For your safety, and to REALLY ensure that the weights don't shift on you, I'd definitely try to find a cheap, used, oly bar for you to use.

I don't know what kind of poundage you're playing with there, but standard bars have MUCH lower thresholds than oly bars. Standard bars start bending pretty fast, where as even cheap oly bars require a couple hundred pounds to bend.

I have an oly barbell and olympic plates. But when I got the barbell the guy at the store gave me a free standard ez bar. SO what I've been doing is taking a standard plate ( i only have about 30lbs in standard plates) and putting it on first so that the oly plates can't slip the bar. I'm just curious if theres a better way.

They sell sleeves that slip over the standard bar. They tighten on with an allen wrench. for the money though just pick up an Oly EZ curl bar.... They are only like $30

I would like to put up 500 on bench press on a standard bar and watch the bar break, without getting injured of course. I would feel so strong, lol.

The Olympic bars that come with those 300 lb. weight sets hold I think around 300-500 lbs and if you buy better ones seperatly they hold up to 1,000 pounds until they start bending. I would just buy a olympic bar.

I would highly doubt that, as every Oly bar I've used has withheld that weight and then some.

No doubt they can handle more... I am just telling you what I heard they are rated at.. I heard it from the salesman in a sports store.. He really knew his shit too, so I believe the guy.. The standard non Olympic bars are rated for 250.. I have bench pressed over 400lbs with them..

I went to Modells and tried to exchange the standard ezbar for an olympic one. They didnt have it. They didnt care anything olympic except for barbells. They had pretty good deals on standard weight sets (110lb set for $40 w/ bar) so I just got on of those. I also got a pretty nice deal on a bench/squatrack combo. $100 for an Everlast (which I think is owned by CAP.) Yeah but I really couldn't believe that they had almost nothing that was Olympic. The salesman, whos a family friend, told me that everyone is switching to the star collars. I hate star collars so much. People are so stupid.

You will need a converter sleeve such as this one sold at www.newyorkbarbells.com
