I still do barbell bench, don't think I'll quit unless it bothers my shoulders. Luckily, I've never had that problem and have done it forever.

I'll switch around sometimes and use db for awhile but have predominantly used flat barbell bench. I also do incline & decline barbell.

I havn't done flat bench in over 3 years. And I don't understand the attention the decline bench gets, especially from noobies. As a male, I DO NOT WANT MY LOWER PECS TO BE PROMINENT! Give me upper pec work any day (at least on chest days).

I do Flat BB bench pressing followed by DB Incline and DB Decline. I really feel the burn in the chest a lot more with the DB exercises. I just might have to switch to all DB exercises after reading this thread! I love this forum so much!

agreed. i started out doing declines every chest day because it made my lower chest looked more defined. that was 4 years ago, but now i feel it's VERY overrated.

I 've pretty much given up on flat bb bench. I started getting a lot of shoulder pain, ditched the flat bench, and I've been pain free for almost a year now. I won't condemn them as a chest builder, but there are different exercises that work very well that my shoulders thank me for.

awe man you make me proud...LOL I feel bench is an excellent mass builder, I do bench almost everyweek followed by incline barbell one week and decline barbell the next, yes it is tough on the shoulders, and over the years I have gotten small tears in my shoulders (very small) but overall, I would not give up flat barbell bench for nothing, It builds chest, shoulder, and tricep thickness, I leave the dumbells for the fitness models...LOL just joking, I use dumbells for flys but thats it, I never do dumbell press' unless its shoulder press'. :dumbells:

LMAO!! Thank god man, I was starting too feel heavily out numbered. :bigthumbu I use db press for incline bench and shoulder also. I used to always use barbell but with getting older and previous injuries my shoulders can't take it anymore.

I haven't done barbell bench in 8 months. All I do is dumbell benching, inclines and flat. My shoulders give me a fit when I do them. I am going to add flyes back in when I go back to my 1 body part per day schedule in a few weeks. I'm damned well stuck at 110 for 7 and I've tried everything to go up but nada. I'm going to do 3 FB WO's for the next 3-4 weeks then back to the old schedule. It's full blown biking season right now and I'm doing a hell of a lot of cardio that's not condusive to strength gains!

I know decline activates the most muscle fibers, but isnt it worthless from a bodybuliding standpoint?

I stayed away from flat for several months, until recently, i onyl do 1 or 2 sets in the 10-12 rep range. Very hard to re-adjust to. Im gonna stick with incline BB, unless anyone can convince me to change to DB...

I think you just answered your own question. A lot of people seem to be using decline now over flat, and it's a great mass builder.

BTW, it's been two weeks without doing flat DB for me and I don't miss it at all. I feel like I have more energy left for decline and my chest workouts still seem to be killing my chest.

Went thru a phase where I mainly did decline, incline and then flat. But we kinda started a compitition on flat and that got me doing to much flat again. I like db pressin the declines and I those first then I like to do incline with the bar and supper set those with db

i meant, does the lower chest even show at all? i thought it was the upper chest that gave the chest its mass appearance

Of course the lower chest shows, that's the majority of your chest. At the same time, if you neglect your upper chest you won't have that "full" look. That's why I always train upper chest first. Decline bench though is better for chest than flat, so there is certainly no reason not to use it and at this point I don't feel I need a flat bench movement, BB or DB, in my chest workout. It was the least effective movement I had in my routine, and I was looking to drop 1 exercise anyway.
