Default Shoulder Routine Update

Awhile back I posted something about how to work the shoulders and this is what I have come to:

military press > compound
shoulder press on machine > isolation (I have to watch my back)
rear lateral raise
side lateral raise

Sounds fine but when do you work your traps?

Default Traps

What would you recommend?

I thought that when you do your back, you are already working the trap area also.

Here's what I do for back:

Chin Up
T Bar
Close Grip Lat Pull Down
Seated Row

How about shrugs or upright row for the traps?

Here's is my usual shoulder routine:

Machine Press 3 sets 8 reps
Shoulder Press 3 sets 12 reps
Side Lateral 3 sets 12 reps
Rear Lateral 3 sets 12 reps
Shrugs or Upright 3 sets ?reps

just keep doing deadlifts and dips and your traps will be fine. I personally don't do any shrug type movements anymore

I can't do deadlifts because of my back.

Well yes you do work your traps when you do back but you also work biceps and legs but I doubt you neglect those do you? Add the Hise shrug to your shoulder workout and be prepared to be rewarded.

Thank you for directing me towards the website. I think I have narrowed down my shoulder routine:

machine shoulder press
upright row
bent over lat raise w/ cable
side lateral raise
maybe front raise

Shoulders dont require a lot of sets. I would recommend:

Military press
Bent over lat. raise (with DBs)
Upright Row, which also hits the traps pretty hard.

You could finish with 1 or 2 sets of shrugs, but you might also try shrugs on back day, after some rows.

your shoudlers get hit with many other exercises. I just do, military press, raw shrugs, l-laterals, eagles, pullups, and decline pushups on shoulder day.

Default Re: Shoulder Routine Update

your original routine looks fine but unless your front delts are seriously lagging, I dont see why you'd want to do machine military press after freeweight military press. My front delts are dead tired after freeweight military presses. But if you can do machine presses and have energy, go for it
