Default Pain in the neck from weighted dips

Whenever I do weighted dips I get a weird strain/soreness at the base of my neck, right around where my collar bone is. Its not a lasting pain at all. In fact a few seconds after I am done with the set it goes away.

I am breathing correctly and I am concentrating on not making funny/straining faces.

Anyone else have this happen to them? Am I maybe doing something wrong?

Thanks,
Brian

This happens when you let your body roll too far forward from your shoulders & arms (think of rolling both your shoulders back, then doing dips in that position... easy muscle strain). focus on keeping the front of your shoulders and front of your chest on the same plane while you do dips next time, your shoulders will invariably roll back a little but just thinking about it should keep them from getting too far back.

I am doing the wide grip version.

Interesting. I was told that while doing the wide grip dips and to work out your chest more you should lean forward more, kinda like a pushup type deal.

You are correct about leaning forward to hit mainly the chest. You would hit mainly chest while leaning forward with the standard width, or even closer grip just by leaning forward.

My advice is to try it with a narrower grip, and see how that feels.. everyone is built differently, and some movements are just not comfotable for some people. Some people can do heavy upright rows for years, and have no problems, while others can use a moderate weight on the exercise, and have severe pain in the delts (rotator cuff)
