It starts out as a clean but instead of dropping the weight when you bring it up to shoulders, you finish by pressing the bar above your head.

Plus links to a video would be great too

Yes, the leg kickback is a variation. (kind of like the difference between sumo deadlift and conventional deadlift.)

clean and jerk...


The Clean and Jerk is considered the "King of Lifts" because the most weight can be lifted overhead this way.

Unlike the Snatch the Clean and Jerk contains two motions. The barbell must be lifted from the platform to a tempory position at the shoulders(the clean). The the bar must be thrust in one continous motion from the shoulders to an overhead hold with out stretched arms(the jerk).

The bar is pulled from the platform to a height of about the waist using the strength of the legs, hips and back. Then the lifter pulls himself under the bar and catches it at the shoulders. The lifter can use either a fore and aft split of the legs or by dropping into a squat. The squat is much more common.

Once the bar is resting at the shoulders and chest, the lifter stands up by using his legs. From an erect position the lifter bends his knees slightly, explosively jumps upward, pushes the bar upward and splits his legs while lowering his body. This allows him to catch the bar at full extension of the arms. To complete the lift he must bring both feet on a line parallel with the shoulders.

Just like the Snatch, the lifters back is straight or arched. The lifter is standing flat on his feet, he should not be leaning forward on his toes.
The angle of his back stays the same till the bar is above the knees.

Originally there were 3 Olympic lifts. The "Press", the "Snatch", and the "Clean and Jerk". The "Press" was eliminated because most lifters were using an extra back bend and some leg action in the press. The Russian lifters were using so much back bend that the lift resembled a standing bench press. Due to the controversy over whether a lift was good or not, it was simply eliminated leaving only the snatch and clean & jerk. There were 2 methods of cleaning (getting the weight from the platform to the chest in the clean and jerk, and of getting the weight directly from the platform to overhead). In the old days, most of the lifters used the "split" which was pulling the weight chest high, and then ducking under using a "lunge" type move (one leg squating with the other going behind for stability). The European lifters began doing the squat clean which was simply pulling the weight chest high, then squatting under the weight with the weight on the chest, feet parallel. The lifter would then stand up (if he could) and in the press/press it overhead with "minimal back bend and no knee action", and in the jerk, with knee action and back bend. The judges just got to lax (particularly in the case of the Russian lifters) in judging the press a "good" lift when in fact it was almost a jerk. Hope this clears up the issue.

lol have any of you even seen a clean and jerk, or snatch???

thats a clean and press, you can tell, because the first motion is a clean, while the second one is a push press

the combniation of the two result in a push press.
