Default lat bar pulldowns

with lat bar pulldowns, what is the difference between pulling it down in front to your chest, or behind you head to your neck?

thanks.

behind the neck just hits it at a different angle, it is effective, but it can be hard on your rotator cuffs.. It depend on the person though. Some people do them with no problems, and others can't do them.. the best thing to do is start with a lower weight, and do real strict slow reps, and increase gradualy to see if you are one of the people who have a problem with it..

keeping your elbows infront of you with a more narrow grip hits the lower lats most effectivly, so I think doing a wide grip behind the back will hit your upper lats very well... I seem to feel it more in my upper lats...

The main difference is that it's a lot easier to hurt yourself pulling down behind your head. You place yourself at high risk for a neck or shoulder injury. Some people insist that they feel a better contraction by pulling behind the head, but IMO, it is not worth the risk of injury. Pulling toward the front, you can go much heavier, which will give you better gains anyway.

x2, plus leaning back a little IMO hits everything better.

I like doing a few behind the neck sets with a really light weight to stretch abit after doing heavy front pulldowns/pullups.

Me, risk... not gonna happen.

I keep refining my pulldowns and my back work in general. Now, when I do wide-grip, my preference is to use a bar that has the grips on the outside, allowing a hammer grip to be used, and I pull straight down with little to no leaning back. Staying vertical ensures a full lat contraction; if you lean back too much, the traps and rear delts are engaged more than the lats. I see some people leaning so far back, they might as well be doing face-pulls.

Glad you revived this thread now, ain't ya'.

I too like the hammer-grip style ones. Awesome for Lower Lat Contraction.

The difference is, doing them to the front is safer and more effective.

Ive never liked doing pulldowns to the rear. Always felt like my shoulders werent moving nicely, so to speak, an unnatural movement. The main difference is behind the neck hits the lower part of the lats and infront of the neck his the centre part of the lats
