Exclamation Knee playing up in squats and leg press

Hey guys, recently (last 3 weeks) my right knee has been playing silly buggers when I try to squat or leg press heavily. As I come thru the parallel there is a nasty feeling like my knees gone pop and a weird hot feeling. It doesnt hurt too bad, but I can tell it definitely is going to if I push it. It happens when I squat over 60 kg ( ) or leg press over 180 kg. It doesnt happen at all when I do SLDL, extensions, curls and isnt affected by any calf training.

WTF!?!?!?!?

Any of you guys had this? if so what did you do? At the moment, Im just doing squat warmup sets (all I can do) then moderate leg presses and then going hard on the others, but it sux coz I cant go hard. Reckon I should see a physio, wait it out or what?

Ive never had this before and there was no special reason for it to happen other than Id taken a week off. No injuries or any shit.

Opinions?

Yeah, good idea to see a physio, especially one with some knowledge of sports and training.

Problems with technique and flexibility are likely to be the problem, and a malalignment of the kneecap a common problem. Is not too hard to correct, so get to it early!

Yeah Ill go to the physio as there is a real reasonably priced one at my gym. Technique isnt the prob, Ive got that down and my flexibility is pretty good, so???? I think its a tendon problem trather than patella malalignment, but Im not the expert, so Ill def get it checked.

Hmm..I haven't had anything like you describe but my right knee does pop once and awhile doing leg extensions. Sucks but it's not debilitating.

ROFL!! :bigthumbu

Seriously, check out a physio or something. Get into some glucosamine sulfate or hydrochloride if it's giving you pain - or if it hurts and aches like a bitch when it's cold. I prefer the hydrochloride, but it really does make a difference.

Do you have a history of using knee wraps?

If there is no pain when it pops things are fine I took a serious injury when I was 23 and my left knee still acts up.

I would see a physio anyway, man. Even if there is no pain. I had no pain in my knee apart from stiffness, a bit of popping. A week later my anterior cruciate ligament raptured. Go and see a physio to be safe.

No, Ive never used them. Ive never been a real heavy squatter, Ive simply never needed to, but I should be lifting 2 1/2 times what I am at the moment.....

leg press is at about 60% so not as bad but still ghey

other leg exercises dont seem to be affected, its strange

My knee isnt popping too bad, but when the thing starts happening it feels like some bad shit is about to go down. Im gona go to the physio next week (free for me ) and see if I can get an ultrasound and/or heat treatment and get his opinions on stretching and warming up/cooling down, etc.

My water intake is always high and Ive been making sure Im getting EFA,s and plenty of 'good' fat. I might try some joint supps if it continues

Cheers guys :bigthumbu

leg presses are horrible on the joints, knees and back. After reaching 6 plates on each side for reps, i no longer use the leg press.

Working through pain= bad. Most likely will only lead to less problems. I'd suggest isolating and fixing the problem before continuing, see a sports doctor would be a good bet.

First ensure your form is good, though.

Thumbs down

Hey guys, turns out Ive probably got something called a Bakers cyst. Its named after its discoverer (bakers dont get it) and its not technically a cyst either, but thats what its called. Its when synovial fluid from the knee leaks out and starts increasing the pressure on surrounding structures. Its not dangerous, but its bloody annoying.
My doctor told me to not do weight exercises involving my knees ( ) but also told me I could get the same benefit from swimming or stair climbing ( ). Im relieved in a way because for the last 2 weeks, Ive thought Ive had a deep vein thrombosis (symptoms are very similar). Im pissed off, coz theres nothing that can really be done about it unless it gets real bad.

Doc told me to go to a physio to get his recommendations so will do that soon as.

Heres a link to a description

I guess I can still do standing calf raise and SLDL? any other suggestions? any of you guys have any experience with this shit?

Best to avoid placing compressive pressure on the knees, such as calf raises, SLDL etc as this can increase the fluid pressure in the cyst and cause it to rupture. This is a very painful experience if it happens!

I have seen some good cysts in a weight lifter, and seen the pain he was in when he ruptured 1 of them. Best bet is to hope they settle down themselves. As that article says, if things don't settle, they can put a needle in and drain them.

Yeah, but the doc said they dont usually drain em unless it gets big. At the moment I dont have noticeable swelling on the back of my knees at all, so Im guessing i havnt got it too bad....

Am I doomed to not train legs for ages

Dunno how Im gona deal with that yet. Any suggestions from the floor?

Man that really sucks! Trying to think of ways to hit your legs without compressing you knees is pretty tough. Swimming isn't going to cut it..lol. You can still do Donkey calf raises and you could do one legged lifts and pulls with cables above the knees. I think your just going to have to get creative and find ways to hit your legs without using your knee.
