Default How many pushups=good workout?

What is a reasonable amount of pushups to do in order to get a good workout?I just did 5 sets of 20 for incline, decline, and regular pushups. Is that good enough or should I do more?I'm really hoping these will help my chest grow and get stronger! What do you guys think?

I used to do alot of pushups a few years ago to help get my bench up I think I used to do about 10 sets til failure. It worked good for me but just mess around and see what you can do.

you will not get bigger or stronger by doing pushups. unless you count being a buck 60 big. to get biger and stronger you need to lift heavier.

If you're really benching 245, and that's not just an e-bench, then you have as much use for push ups as I have for an asshole... right here [points to elbow]. Get off your hands, and get benching.

And if your 245 bench is really just a dream bench, then get benching anyway.

it increases muscle endurance and would help you with the weights.

if you want to know a good number Army PT test for a 20 YO says 80 pushups would give you a perfect score.

Well for one my I have no reason to lie about my bench.Ask big tris 34.He goes to school with me.We both play football.I'v been lifting for 3 years going on 4.If no one believes my bench that's fine because I know what it is I am going to keep on getting stronger.

Second I figured it would help out. After I got done with them the other day my chest was pretty sore.Well thanks for everyone's advice!! :bigthumbu

I don't think anyone was really doubting it they were just stating that if he is doing 245 pushups are useless except as a possible warm up exercise to get blood into the area.

It's not enough of a warm up for me. I like to loosen up my entire shoulder region by using the handbike for 5 mins. Then I stretch, strech with the bar, and do a solid warm up with low weight and pyramid up to my work sets. After hurting myself a few times not being properly warmed up on bench I'm very careful now. If your shooting for personal bests on bench you don't want to wear yourself out doing tons of pushups and causing fatigue before you hit the heavy stuff.

What would be the best thing to do then? What weight should I use and how many reps should I do to warm up?

Honestly, I'm not sure what you want from push ups. Unless you're in jail, in which case they're great. Put your feet on your bunk and go.

Warm up? Do 10, then 20, then get busy on a bench.

Serious work? Then do sets of 15 with very short rest. 5-10 sets.

Beyond that, for serious results, you're asking a beagle with a bad leg to win the Kentucky Derby.

For warm up sets I do half of my max working weight and 10 reps.

I do 5 sets of 30, sometimes followed by bodyweight dips. I normally just do these at home.

I need to be able to do at least 56 in 2 minutes for the Navy physical fitness test...I can already do that, though and I am not even in bootcamp yet! :P
