When I stretch into a split, after warming up, I can get to a point where my balls are about ten inches from the floor. At this point, it feels as though most of the strain is on the insides of my knees, rather than in the groin itself. If I point my toes upwards it helps to shift some of the stress back onto the groin, but the knees are still very painful. To counter this problem, I've spent some time doing a modified split.....I go down in a kind of kneeling position, while trying to force my knees outward. This eliminates a lot of the stress on the knees, but I know that I'll eventually want to be able to do it the standard way. This knee pain is what seems to be holding me back. I've been putting a lot of effort into stretching for a little over a week now, which I know isn't a very long time yet. Is this just a slow gradual process, or is there something else I can do to help it along?
