I've tried Hise Shrugs a couple of times, and they truly are killers. I don't know why I stopped doing them, but I think I will start again. Maybe tomorrow night, which is back training.

why not use the smith? it seems the flat surface area of that machine would cause more friction and whatnot

The one in my gym is perfect. It has a nice flat platform and the pads sit right on your shoulders. It's absolutely perfect for shrugging. I tried the Smith first and it was a lot more ackward and I wasn't getting as good a range of motion.
