Default high weight-low reps ??

so i keep hearing this rumor about if u lift big and dont rep so much its gets u bigger rather than cutting u (as opposed to lower weight an more reps). what is the thinking behind this routine? does it actually work? is that how you add size, along with ones diet of course?

It's not a rumor that lifting big will get you big. Look at a lot of the many powerlifters out there competing in the top of their class, are they small?

Stay away from flex or muscle and fitness magazine.

Lifting heavy alone and lifting with volume (high reps) alone will have limitations. Properly combining the two (volume and intensity) in a quality routine involving large, multi-joint exercises is how you get big. Personally, I like to keep my PRIMARY exercises in the 3-8 rep range. Most would consider that relatively heavy... especially the common weekend warrior.

the part I bolded will be some of the most useful info you'll ever get on training. There is a lot more that goes into that statement.

there are a number of periodization methods to choose from. Read PowerMan2000's stickies in the "Training" section to understand what periodization is. Varying intensities through waves and progressive overload is essential to quality gains.
